Disable network discovery

Hi all,

 

I've removed "Network" from every location in file explorer so that the users don't have an entry point to it.

 

However i have found that if a user clicks on and shortcut to a folder in a network location, the are able to then click on "Network" and are presented will all the devices on the network.

 

In windows 7 we used windows firewall to prevent this. However, we nolonger have this enabled and would like to disable network discovery via GPO if possible.

 

I've had a look in our GPOs but can't find anything.

 

Anybody had this before?

From memory i think it is the "network discovery tools" in Windows firewall (rules configured via GPO)

Annoyingly, there doesn't appear to be a way to prevent this.

In the end I added the shortcuts to the startmenu and removed the network shortcut. I'll give the firewall solution a try next time I'm in the office. Many thanks for the replies.

Wait, you have the firewall disabled?

 

Maybe disable the Function Discovery Resource Publication service

Yeah it is quite annoying that it can’t seem to be disabled easily. There’s not much a student could do really though. I tried a student account and I was able to visit printer settings and the ip cameras but they are password protected anyway.

Thanks, already done this one. Its when the path displays in the explorer bar that I can't fix. They can click back to network. I've got around it by removing my network shortcut.
