abillybob Posted October 17, 2018 Posted October 17, 2018 Hi All So one of our main HyperV Servers has literally just stopped. No reasoning that I could see but when looking at the server all the lights on the hard drives where vacant, nothing was flashing? I hooked up a screen to see what was going on but the screen stayed black, couldn't get a video output. I hard restarted the server and went looking at Intel's RAID software but it says it's all working fine without issues. The Machine loaded itself up perfectly fine straight into Windows without hesitation and looking through the event viewer logs literally shows me no warnings or errors or anything for that matter relating to why it went down? Does anyone have any ideas? Last time it did it the only thing I could find was something to do with IPv6 but this time it doesn't say anything and I'm not convinced it was just a network issue as the whole screen was black? Any help would be most appreciated, it's a really strange one!

Did it have any updates scheduled? Is the ILO/DRAC/pre-boot giving you any info about issues like RAM? Could an issue on a VM have caused the hypervisor to lose it? I had a Hyper-V host do similar a few years back - the RAID controller was dying. Swapped it out, good as gold since.

See it's weird because in event viewer it says it had turned off under Critical so maybe it did and then it's automatic start up sequence kicked in and it failed to load for some reason but won't show any errors. I also thought about the RAID card but I just want to be sure as it's such a big variable as to what it could be. No updates scheduled I have to manually install them and when booting nothing shows a problem? Do you have Sophos on the servers? Nope we use ESET although are moving to Malware Bytes Endpoint! Could you access the server from a remote PC or was it total lights out? Total lights out The server was "Running" ie the power light and the Network indicator on the front where on but no HDD activity showing and when plugging in a monitor nothing just a black screen. Once we restarted it was ok again but this isn't the first time it's done it.

Might be time to look to get an additional host or juggle servers around and move the more important ones to the other host if you have one so there isn't too much downtime. When its total lights out can you not even connect to the servers from another PC? Have you ran any diagnostics I know Dell have some, I'd be looking at HDD and memory to start with.

Server is only around 4 years old. No can't connect, can't ping can't do anything. I might give that a go and see what it says. They're super micro servers which I've never used before, not sure if they have a diagnostic built in like the Dells! They have like a diagnostics page hosted on the server that you can look at but that just tells me everything is hunky dorey!
