Joining admin machines to a network

As I have mentioned in a couple of other threads I have recently taken on IT support for a couple of primary schools and one of the things I am struggling with most is the lack of standardisation in both schools, despite them both having support contracts in place before me.

 

Some of the worst machines are the administration machines which run on their own network, with one of the desktops being a 'server' for the other handful of 'clients'. After a quick once-over on these they are massively behind on things like AV and Windows Updates), each seems to have a different password etc. Whilst I am going to be looking at moving file stores and the SIMs SQL to a proper server long term, I would like to get these computers joined to the domain pretty promptly to make sure they are somewhat managed (have Windows Update policies applied, AV managed better). Other than ensuring Shares are properly secured are there any other pitfalls I am likely to face with SIMs if joining these machines to the domain?

I'd check what sort of support contract provision they have with County/captia.

The in primaries I worked in the "admin network" had been set up by Captia who would refuse to support it if it were merged into the curriculum network (at least under the current contract). They very much liked to be able to do their own thing with the admin network and not have other techs messing with it.

 

Otherwise, I can't think of any reason why you can't do what your planning.

Funnily enough I have contacted our local LA since sending this to find out exactly where their support starts and ends!

Sounds like a few schools I visit, more and more are been migrated to curriculum/one network now.

 

Many schools will only pay the bear minimum and if it works for them then why do they need all these fancy updates and permissions!!
