networkmangler Posted October 16, 2018 Posted October 16, 2018 I'm looking into Sims hosted The only thing I'm not sure on is how our current connectors would connect to sims to get the data For example we have groupcall Xporter, 4Matrix, Wonde, parentpay MIS Sync and a few others What would I need to do to get these to work?
atcoates Posted October 16, 2018 Posted October 16, 2018 (edited) Depends on the supplier of the hosted service. With Capita you need a PC in school that will run the 3rd party tools. Capita set this up for you as part of the migration. Other providers might have their own dedicated machines for this and avoid you needing to do this onsite. Check with each supplier to see how they would handle this. Found this from Capita... Linking 3rd party software to SIMS and FMS We provide each school with a single VPN connection to allow your IT team to link any 3rd party software* you currently use with SIMS. If you have multiple 3rd party links, we can provide costs for any additional VPN connections you may need.*You will need to check with each software provider to get their confirmation that they have the necessary process in place to enable this connection. Ma2 Posted October 17, 2018 Posted October 17, 2018 On the plus side all the SIMS addons that use the SIMS Service Manager for data extraction will work straight from the hosted platform, so there is potential to simplify things.
mhw1970 Posted October 26, 2018 Posted October 26, 2018 I would seriously talk to other schools if considering Capita hosted service - I am not impressed with it at all - slow / lots of disconnections / hard to save locally / profile issues / discover transfers nightmare / at Capita's whim when they upgrade you or decide to migrate servers...........I would rather have own server and be in control / able to fix things more quickly myself!!!

Windows desktop application such as SIMS works on basis of each instant can serve one user. This is true if runs locally in premise or as hosted SIMS. This means for a secondary school with say 100 concurrent user will require resources equivalent to 100 PC resources eg CPU power and RAM etc... In contrast an MIS written as a web application is shared amongst 100 concurrent users and requires fraction 100 PCs. This is why cost of “hosted SIMS” is much higher when high number of concurrent users needed. Even then for financial viability resources allocated is not likely to be for maximum number of concurrent users but for average number of concurrent users. This is why performance fluctuates wildly and slowness and disconnections is experienced when numbermof concurrent users climb specially during peak times eg morning and afternoon registration.
