Hi

We have started working with a large MAT and i was wondering if anyone had any naming conventions that work well? I am looking for Device and User naming conventions. The MAT have some schools with the same name so i am looking for ideas on how to overcome duplicates, especially on usernames.

Thanks

We prefix all devices with a unique 3 letter school code (usually just the school's initials), but we're on our own separate domains within the trust AD forest so there aren't username conflicts.

With our usernames, we go

First letter of the school

year of Year 1 entry, whether they were in Y1 in one of our schools or not.

full stop

First Initial

Surname

Then a numerical suffix if there is a collision

So we have three schools: C, H and K. An example username is

C16.JBloggs

H13.JSmith3

and so on.

As for devices, in an ideal world I'd name them after their asset number but we don't do that here. Instead, we name them after the room that they're in and tag a sequential number on the end.

That's all very well and good but if you're syncing all of your domains against the same Office 365 tenant like we are, you still need to make sure that all of your users have unique usernames otherwise you get a conflict there.

Every schools has a code assigned to them: EG AC. Groups and computers etc are named after this code. Eg: AC-PC01

Staff and students we decided not to use the prefix. We have staff who roam between sites and it seemed better not to do it. As well as this we didn't want the code in the email address and with the days of cloud technology its best to keep the username and email address the same.

All our schools are on the same domain.

Hi Norphy

I think that will get a bit complicated as we deal with a lot of primary in the trust. I think it will make the logins too complicated for the younger users. We are going to be going down the one domain route.

FN-GM I do like your idea but do you not have any duplicates in the trust? Can i ask how many site you have at the moment? I do not like the idea of having codes / numbers in the staff email addresses as i think it looks unprofessional?
