We don't supply laptops to Staff, so that's not really an option sadly. Will speak to SLT, but think we'll go with disabling Offline files option also - just need to see if this will have a knock effect for the Chromebooks we have for 6th form.

@FN-GM the built in backup? I've looked at Vault it can do somethings I wouldn't say its a backup solution..

I love it I have the drive on Mac and works great to sync via the desktop than browser. And I can open my file edit and the file updates. Excellent best service I experienced.

 

Onedrive I don’t like as I don’t want the file kept locally I want free my harddrive and just access everything on the cloud.

I have a look at the minute what put in the cloud downloading into a folder on my Mac at the min annoying. But I do use both system.

For Files On-Demand on a Mac you need the latest OneDrive beta and be running Mojave + APFS...

That's fine for deleted files but not if the files in a directory have been encrypted for example. they have been encrypted/changed you'd have to manually revert each file back to a previous version..

Anyone know whether Google have any plans to make Google Drive File Stream log uses in automatically from their AD credentials or at least remember the credentials after they have logged in once even if moving computers?

This was the reason we didn't deploy file stream. I got quotes for backups and it just wasn't something we could afford. Currently relying on the built-in undelete feature of G Suite. If the file was deleted more than. 25 days ago then it is gone. We haven't had any requests for any files older than 25 days in the 4 years we have been running For Suite.

I disabled File Stream for the very same reason. I have heard from a source within Google that the way File Stream works is that each file is sandboxed and so wouldn't be susceptible to a ransomware attack. I just don't want to be the guinea pig!

Nothing at all. I just get our users to use the Google Chrome web browser and access all of their drive files via the browser. Safest method as far as I'm concerned and best method to help transition our users towards moving to a Chromebook environment as opposed to Windows environment.

So they're working entirely with web files? they're not downloading and uploading anything?

No, they are working with all sorts of files, not just Google Docs/Sheets/Slides. Users download and upload files through the web browser using Windows File Explorer. Some users still work with Office files, Publisher, Access, one of my schools still uses ActivInspire flipcharts. They simply use Google Drive to store the data and download and upload as necessary.

True, but if you allow File Stream, they can download this on their home PC/laptop. You can't stop them from running code on those devices.

We just pay for Spanning Backup and give the staff the tools they need. I can't imagine having to download and upload every doc I needed, although its a great way of getting everyone to use G Docs etc.

And this is exactly why it worked. Getting our users to understand why it was better to use Google Docs is what helped to speed up our migration away from expensive Office costs. The majority of what we are doing can be done in Google Docs/Sheets/Slides. So why not push in that direction?

Fair enough, making it annoying is a plan. I'd expect the result to be 15 copies of the same file that no one has the latest version of.

 

It's weird there's no setting to only allow google files to be synced to machines you authorise
