Default apps issue

Hi everyone,

 

We didn't have this problem on 1709 but on 1803 our default apps xml file doesn't seem to work. We copy it into windows\system32 as before but everytime the machine is restarted it just seems to ignore this file. Its my fault really I uninstalled photos by accident on the image so am having to do a workaround by defaulting picture files to paint but after a reboot they go back to not opening.

 

Any help would be amazing.

Try moving it into a sub folder giving "everyone" full permissions to the parent folder and file and see if that helps. I had issues with this and it turned out to be permission related. Although I can't recall the exact permission I used, I can check though.

And I just came here for the same reason.

 

So far I have used a GPO for the defaultapps xml it seems to work then win 10 happily overides the settings almost instantly.

 

I have heard that changing OEMDefaultAssociations.xml might fix the issue but I have not tested it yet.

 

Why edge keeps wanting to open pdfs I don't know.

Which PDF reader are you using? This can happen if you are using an old version of Adobe Reader or Acrobat.

it just seems to ignore this file.

This can happen if your XML file doesn't have the correct encoding.

It needs to be UTF8 with no BOM otherwise Windows will ignore it.

I've checked the encoding and it is plain UTF-8. I've also alternated between .txt and .xml and it has made no difference and just now I have tried the command DISM /online /import-defaultappassociations: while being logged on as an admin and nothing changes. This has to be bugged surely?

Just to clarify. Were you using the GPO previously to set the path to the XML (rather than DISM)?

I copy my XML file into a subfolder within ProgramData and have the permissions pictured below on the folder and GPO. What are yours like?

Yes I was using GPO to set the path to the XML. My permissionw when I do the same are; Administrators-FC, Users-R, SYSTEM-FC

Does changing Users from 'Read' to 'Read & Execute' make any difference?

 

On the GPO, do "Domain Computers" and "Authenticated Users" also have read access?

Had the same problem. I've set the link order to 1 of this gpo. And seems to work again......for now. Windows 10 is a giant bug[emoji25]
