Intranet with SSL Certificate

Hello all,

 

Hope everyone is having a good summer.

 

The head of IT has built an intranet page for staff, just a basic page with links on. The server its on is webserver, but he wants the intranet to be called dashboard I have created a DNS name for dashboard to the server ip address. But when we create a SS Certificate as its wanted to be https, the certificate is for webserver rather than dashboard so we get a certificate error.

 

Is there a way to create a certificate for dashboard?

 

Whats the best way to sort this? Am i missing something obvious?

Do you have a wildcard for your main domain? easiest way would just be add in the full "external-ish" DNS name for the server and use that internally (Like you would if you were accessing your external website internally) so you'd end up with using a dashboard.school.co.uk etc (doesn't need to work externally)

 

In regards to doing what you mean you can just use the powershell (or other program) way to do it just by adding the -dnsname as the dashboard rather than localhost etc

 

Example (not complete based on what other options you want):

 

New-SelfSignedCertificate -DnsName "dashboard" ....

I always buy a wild card domain *.schoolname.co.uk and then it works externally and internally - and for any and as many sites as I wish to host.

The best way in the long run is to have a domain Certificate Authority and request a Self-signed certificate for the intranet server. You can then distribute the CA cert to clients via GPO and that will trust the self signed cert from this web server and also can be used for other certs. Loads of stuff on google about certificate authorities and self signing...

 

or a wild card 3rd party cert of course

 

edit: I have recommended the CA and self signing as it's an "intranet" - but if you will give the users external access to the intranet then the 3rd party cert is by far more beneficial for you and everyone else.
