Ruckus Controller 3000 to virtual ruckus

I was wondering if anyone transferred from a physical box to a virtual box that manages all the wireless systems. If so I have a few questions

 

1. did you have to by new access points to support this or does any model support this.

2. If you bought additional licenses do these transfer across

3. Is it reliable and performance is okay on hyper-v.

4. does it cost a lot to implement or is it cheaper than replacing a physical controller.

Hi Nathan,

vSZ doesnt support all AP models. If you can let me know which models you have I can let you know.

 

2. If you bought additional licenses do these transfer across

ZD licenses do not transfer across, however if you have the right partner they will be able to negotiate high discounts on the licenses when transferring from ZD to SZ ( we can do this for you if you're not already engaged with someone else)

 

3. Is it reliable and performance is okay on hyper-v.

No performance issues that i'm aware of. Due to its price, you could always purchase 2 instances for HA.

 

4. does it cost a lot to implement or is it cheaper than replacing a physical controller.

It is considerably cheaper than a physical controller

 

In order to run an vSZ instance you will need certain specs for your environment. If you let me know your AP counts I can let you know. Also, with Hyper-V you would need to run 2012 R2.

We have the following models at the min

 

R600

ZF-7341

ZF-7343

ZF-7352

ZF-7363

ZF-7762

 

We currently have 75 license but would be upgrading to 100 more than likely. Could you get me a quote and I could pass this onto my boss to make the decision. I know that we bought an additional 25 licenses and I know that they cost quite abit. the hyper-v are currently running 2012 -r2 but don't you give it a separate virtual machine?. Also is the virtual interface the same as the physical as we tunnel all the guest traffic through the controller at the min.

Your R600s won't be a problem. I need to double check some of your 7 series APs. I will confirm those tomorrow when I'm back in the office.

 

No problem to provide some pricing. If you could PM me your contact details and organisation name and I'll be able to request the relevant pricing.

 

The licenses on the SmartZones are single licenses, rather than the minimum 25 upgrade license that the 3000 series forced, so it means we can match the license count precisely, and also add additional licenses much cheaper.

 

With the virtual SmartZone you'll get a software instance that would then run on your environment. I can ask one of our engineers to jump on a call with you tomorrow if you'd like a tour of the GUI and technical evaluation?

Just following up from yesterday, a number of your older APs would not work with the R600s on the virtual SmartZone and are only capable of running the really old FW. We could get the 7352s and R600s working together, but none of the others, your 7341, 7343, 7363 and 7762 all would not work on the same FW code as the R600s.

Okay then thanks for that we have about 40 45 of the 7363 so looks like we would have to stay with it as the cost for new ones will be too much.

No problem, makes more economic sense to stay put for the time being. Just for your reference on the ZD it looks like you will be able to run up to FW v9.13 and support all your AP models. At a point when you're ready to upgrade, we can always put a case to Ruckus for additional discounts to upgrade your AP estate.
