Migrate iMacs to new domain

I have 18 iMacs and a Mac Mini server for my music suite and they just work to be honest, never have to go in there!

 

They are bound to my AD and use profile manager for restrictions etc.

 

This summer i have rebuilt my entire Windows network and now need to migrate the macs to the new domain.

 

 

1) My old domain was %SchoolInitals% . local - yes i made the error of using a .local domain with imacs. It is better now that when i first got the macs 5/6 years ago.

 

My new domain is %SchoolInitials%.org

 

My server is currently called MacServer.local if i just rename it to MacServer.org as per my new domain and then go into Preferences->User Accounts-> Login Options -> Network Account Server, edit this and remove the old

domain name and bind to the domain name.

 

2) If i then repeat this step unbind/bind to new domain for each of my 18 iMacs is that all i need to do?

 

3) Will it break any of the profile manager stuff?

 

I know i will need to change any network mounts i have for shared areas etc. but i presume it will map the new home areas based on the windows AD home folder setting?

 

All the groups and users currently showing in Profile manager are from the old network do i need to delete these or will the unbind/bind process fix these?

 

 

 

All the iMacs and the server have fixed IP's which wont be changing at all which should help i guess.

 

 

Sorry for all the questions!! Any advise is much appreciated!! I did have a look on google but couldnt find an answer, it was all about moving from local accounts to domain accounts.

Renaming your server from MacServer.local to MacServer.org won't work as this is its Bonjour name and you can't edit the .local suffix for Bonjour. It will always append this to whatever you decide its name is going to be. Its FQDN is another matter and that's what you should be changin because your domain has changed. Make no mistake - just as in AD - changing your domain will have a major impact on your Macserver, OD and in turn Profile Manager and everything else that depends on them.

 

In brief: 1) No. Its your DNS you have to change not bonjour; 2) Yes; 3) Yes.

 

Once you reset your Macserver's hostname you'll have to start again with Open Directory and by implication Profile Manager which, in turn, will change your APNS certificate. If it was me I would start again with the server and the whole stack that you're going to need.
