ISP which allows home server

Do you know of any ISP's which will allow me to run a home webserver? The server will be for me to learn linux web server administration. I contacted Tiscalli but they said no.

I have VM Cable. I have had a Linux box running off it for about a decade.

Provided you don't do anything daft, demon allow it if you have a static IP.

VM seems good but I just don't want to pay £40 for the router, I am wondering if AOL will take the one back that they gave me.

I have a WRT54GL, which also runs Linux (OpenWRT firmware). You'll learn a lot if you buy one of these little beasties too.

Some ISP's block the ports. Also there is sometimes a clause in the T&C and/or AUP preventing you from running servers.

i'm using an enta reseller (ADSL24 Broadband - Home) and they allow you to run a webserver they also give you 8ip addresses to use as well.

Freedom2Surf allow you to do that, you just need the correct arm of the Tiscali operation to do it you see

if its for your own private purposes and its just port forwarded from a router. I dont see how tiscali can stop or even know what you're doing with a random port and dynamic dns/ just ip.

I ran a web server with Tiscali - I think it's still going at my parent's house.

When we were with BT they used to probe my SMTP server to see if it was usable as a relay for spam.

You can also do it with Freedom2Surf - and they give static IPs which is a bonus. It was quite useful for connecting to my uTorrent machine to check my Linux distributions were downloading, and to add new ones to download.

I don't like what Tiscali told you.

 

I ran a web sever from a Tiscali connection for the longest time up until about ~9 months ago and it'll be going back soon. It wasn't in the AUP that we agreed to when we got the connection (they've probs changed it) that you can't run a webserver but what they don't want is open relays. That is to say SMTP servers that allow the relaying of any messages without authentication or restriction because it can heavy bandwidth on their network if someone were to find your server and abuse it.

 

To be honest though, you could do better than Tiscali. I've been running a web server and a whole host of other servers from my Virgin Media 20Mbit cable for the last ~9 months whilst I've been at uni.

Don't even get me started on Piscali, please. Never been so glad to leave an ISP! The final straw came when I was TOLD that I was on an unsuitable package at home and needed a "business class" package just because I do VPN into here..

 

Such an entire bunch of knuckledragging peanut munchers..and I can't say as I'd touch any of their subsidiaries now either.
