I've read this thread http://www.edugeek.net/forums/windows/17752-ie-7-keeps-crashing.html but it hasn't helped... :(

We have Windows XP SP2, IE7, Shockwave 11.0... I've made sure everything is completely up to date, including Flash and JRE

I've even run the shockwave uninstaller and then re-installed.

Every time I try to use Shockwave in BBC Little Animals (say) - I get

Missing Shockwave Decompression XTRA (even running as administrator)

Any ideas please?

Maybe some screenshots of the error may help and the direct URL of the site in question for those that don't have it.

Have you tried it with an older version of shockwave?

I've just been checking it out on my PC at home - I've got Shockwave 10.3 at home, so will try that in the morning.

There isn't much to show screenshot wise... an empty box with :

"Missing Shockwave Decompression XTRA" on the blue bar and a nice red X in the corner, so you can close it... so helpful

This page looks like it could hold the solution to the issue for you:

Adobe - Macromedia Shockwave Player

Like the error message suggests, your Shockwave installation can't find "swadcmpr.x32" - perhaps the auto-download checkbox wasn't ticked when the file was published, or perhaps the auto-download URL fails to locate the xtra, or perhaps this xtra isn't included in the "full" installer, or ...

FWIW: my installation of SW11 has a copy at 'C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Adobe\Shockwave Player

11\xtras\download\AdobeSystemsIncorporated\SWA\swadcmpr.x32'

Go to the adobe site and download the shockwave player , it will get loaded in the wrong place. They are placing it in the program files adobe file folder xtras. You will find the file SWADCmpr.X32, copy and then go to your system or system32 file folder, then to macromed, then shockwave and lastly Xtras. Paste the file and restart your computer. Thats how I got mine to work but I haven't figured out yet what happen to the sound.

Looks like the installer dumps the compressor in the users folder when it installs rather than the system folder. Which installation method are you using, the MSI or a manual installer?

I'm using the manual installer... started with the msi, but am just trying to get it working now.

I saw the above on google earlier this afternoon and had a look...

in the System32\Macromed there was a Shockwave 10 folder, but not Shockwave 11

In the Adobe folder as described above there was a Shockwave 11 folder containing the Xtras... I tried copying the whole shockwave 11 folder into the System32 location, but had no joy with this even after a reboot.

My next suggestion would be running filemon and regmon . To make it remotely readable I would start both up and right click on the procesesses that are logged that you have no interest in and set it to ignore them.

Then go to the site in question which should trigger the error. Jump back into filemon and stop recording events. Now you should be able to go through and look at what files are being accessed by the IE7 and shockwave processes including which ones it can't find and where it is looking.

I would first probably check the permissions on the files that you dropped into the system32 directory to make sure that the appropriate users have read access to them.

You're welcome, and good luck with it in the morning.

For reference my files show up in the

"C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Shockwave 10\Xtras"

directory but I am running the v10 MSI here. Filemon is probably the only way you are going to be able to figure out where it is looking though.

A quick update to fill you in:

I uninstalled shockwave 11.0 manually, rebooted and installed Shockwave 10.3 manually... this in conjunction with fully updated IE7, XP Pro SP2, Flash and JRE works...

19 PCs down; 14 to go

The teachers are happy; they can use BBC website... I will explore further what went wrong with Shockwave 11 when I have time!

:D yeah im just waiting for the next time the site causes a problem again... cause of a windows update, flash update, java update, shockwave update... such a pain.
