Intel or AMD

Intel for me.

 

I've always supported Intel through the thick and thin, my desktop PCs and Laptops for me personally have always been Intel. Started out with a Pentium 166MHz, then went on to a P2 400 with MMX technology, then I had a P3 laptop that was a 1.13GHz I vagly remember (was a while ago now), then had a P4 2.2GHz chip in my desktop (was custom ordered for me and I got it on day of launch ) then changed that for a 3ghz P4 Extreme Edition - just did a chip change as the board was fine with a firmware upgrade, then had a mate that had the same chip die and I was no longer needing the power of the EE, so sold him that and got a cheap 3GHz P4 530 CPU from eBay for me and that did me till the latest Intel Quad Core Q6600 chip I have now. Oh yeah and got a P4 2.66GHz laptop in amongst all that lot which I still have.

 

So lots of Intel for me, but my sister whos PCs I've built are usualy AMD based due to cheaper or my cast offs (so in those cases Intel), but her Laptop is an Intel Centrino as it was the best chip at the time for mobile use.

 

As for what I recomend and sell, well depends its often AMD based due to costs, but at present I am going for the low end Core2 range as they are such good value really for performance.

Ah, the luxury - mine was the 166! I didn't learn though, when I "upgraded", I bought the MII 300! I soon took it back and swapped it for the AMD though. Imagine, I had one motherboard and was able to put any of the three major brands' chips in it!

well I remember my first processor was an AMD Am5x86 (the one that was equivalent to a P-75) in Mexico we used to call it the "Pentium for the poor" because by then the Intel Pentiums were much more expensive, so whilst I was dreaming to get a Pentium Pro , instead I got that AMD, but many of my classmates and teachers were impressed at uni when I used this machine (Am5x86 133MHz, 2 MB VRAM, 64 MB RAM and 2 GB Hard Drive) as a Windows NT 4.0 Server for a Project Network . after that I when onto a K6-2 300 MHz but that was all my experience with AMD, then moved to Intel since then at present I am stuck with a P4 3Ghz seeing to upgrage at some point.

The AMD5x86 - I remember those! Mine was resold by a company called 'Evergreen' and was a repackaged version designed to upgrade my 50mhz 486DX2 to a 'Pentium Equivalent'.

 

I remember, just before Windows'98 was released, running Windows 95R2 on this poor, poor machine and doing everything I can to get to look/run like Windows 98. I had that Evergreen 75mhz chip with 8mb Ram and a 160mb hard disk compressed to ive 300gm space. You can imagine how slow it was by the time I got Internet Explorer 5 installed!

 

After giving the machine all that abuse I then proceeded in using IE5 on that machine to surf the .net through a 14.4bkbps modem. You thought loading a 32k game off a tape was slow, let me tell you!

 

My first processor - A Zilog Z80 (Intel 8080 rebadged and sold to the masses). Then a Motorola MC68000 followed by a MC68020 - 14mhz and 32bit if you please!

If you will, to date, in order, if I can remember them....

 

16k ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC464, Amiga 600 (2mb Ram, 20mb HDD), Amiga 1200 (2mb, 120mb HDD), Dell 486 (upgraded as in last post), Home built PC (orginally WinChip 200 then AMD K6-2 400 (overclocked to 450 if you please)), 4 laptops of varing specs in my first home network, Advent P4 1.2Ghz with RDRam, Home built Athlon 2200+, Powerbook G3 and now finally my beloved MacBook Pro. Phew!

We usually stick with Intel here mainly for continuity purposes but at home I use AMD. Just rebuilt my home system with;

AMD Phenom 9600 black edition CPU

Sapphire HD3870 512Mb PCI-Express graphics card

500GB SATA II HD

Gigabyte GA-MA790FX-DQ6 socket AM2+ motherboard

4GB DDR2 RAM

 

I haven't found the need to clock it yet
