Recommendations for encrypted portable hard drives for staff?

Hi,

We have several staff who take work home with them on hard drives. At the moment they are using encrypted usb sticks but some require larger capacity drives. Does anyone have experience of 500GB+ encrypted drives and can comment on their reliability?

I've encrypted up to 1TB internal drives with Bitlocker, but as they'd be sensible to have backups of any USB drives why not just use Google/OneDrive?

I use a 500gb external hard drive to backup external files at home. It's encrypted with VeraCrypt rather than Bitlocker but i've never had a problem with it.

 

I really wouldn't be concerned by this at all; Bitlocker on internal drives is going to get way way more throughput in terms of read/writes than an external hard drive is so I imagine it's far less likely to corrupt a comparatively seldom used external drive. You're far more likely to find they forget the password, so remember to take a copy of the recovery key so you can open it for them when they do.

I've used the Buffalo Ministation Extreme portable HDDs a few times and they are just about OK. I much prefer the Datatravelers if I'm honest, as they are our current portable storage device of choice & they are really easy to use and pretty bulletproof. The question I would be asking is why anybody would actually need to be carrying more than a couple of GB of data around with them on a portable device. Realistically, if anybody is asking to carry around more than would be expected to fit on an encrypted stick, I would be asking what the data is and why they need to be carrying it around with them all of the time. I normally issue the staff here with 8GB sticks as standard, but if they need larger, I do have a couple of 16 & 32GB ones too. If they need any more than that, I'd be asking them to provide a business case and running it by the head.
