Theldron Posted July 17, 2018 Posted July 17, 2018 Hi all, We have a set of Acer netbooks, I have one that i need to boot from a USB, but cannot as secure boot is enabled. ReBoot Posted July 17, 2018 Posted July 17, 2018 I have successfully booted Clonezilla from USB on these netbooks. I used a version of Clonezilla which supported UEFI secure boot (Ubuntu based) and it worked OK. I do seem to remember that it was difficult (if not impossible) to disable secure boot. What exactly are you trying to boot with ? We are thinking of buying a trolley full of these do you have any opinions/experience on their quality/usability. Cheers
Theldron Posted July 17, 2018 Author Posted July 17, 2018 I have tried the options but the bios won't even recognise the USB, in the boot menu of the BIOS all I get is boot manager. How can I put this politely, I am not a big fan of Acer as it is and these devices have in no way changed my view.

I'm there tomorrow - if no-one else solves the problem I'll see if anything jogs my memory. It was something in the BIOS...

LeMarchand Posted July 18, 2018 Posted July 18, 2018 I should have known! It was my Acer that had the same problem. Still can't remember how i got around it, but I must have as I recently installed 1803 on it. I can remember using Rufus... Really should have written it down at the time. It's currently sat next to me in the hopes that I'll have a "Eureka" moment. (Without the streaking).

difinity Posted July 18, 2018 Posted July 18, 2018 A couple of things you could try, I don't know if they are applicable with this laptop but I've encountered them in the past. A supervisor password is required to be set and/or secure boot needs to be disabled and the settings saved then the UEFI entered for a second time before the setting can be set.

Thanks mate, I have tried them. I can't believe that there is no way to boot from USB on these - its going to drive me bonkers.

Mine is a W510 from a few years back and doesn't have legacy BIOS option. I'm now having vague recollections of the USB booting being very unreliable in that sometimes it would pick up the USB and other times not. How many times have you tried booting? I've just tried with a few bootable disks I have at hand: WinPE on FAT32: Seems to recognise that the disk is there, but doesn't do anything Easy2Boot multiboot on NTFS: Doesn't recognise Win10 to go created with Rufus on : Shows as boot option and seemed to boot OK, but I got bored of waiting for it to complete As @difinity says, this has got a BIOS password etc set. If it's just the one, is it worth trying a USB/ethernet adapter? If I remember tonight I'll grab a suitable USB drive from home and have a play tomorrow. However, it's Date Night with Mme LeMarchand and The Rock, so may not have time/remember.

Has it got the latest BIOS on it ? There are no release notes but it's described as "adjust USB strength to avoid usb function fail."
ReBoot Posted July 18, 2018 Posted July 18, 2018 You can definitely boot from USB as I have done it with Clonezilla. However, your media needs to support secure boot as legacy boot seems to be the issue on these devices. I did ask previously what system you are trying to boot with as if this is not signed for secure boot its probably not going to work.
LeMarchand Posted July 19, 2018 Posted July 19, 2018 OK, just got mine to successfully boot from a W10/1803/x32 ISO made with Rufus (Portable) 2.18.1213 using the MBR for UEFI mode (NOT the one with CSM). It showed up in the boot devices as expected and booted to the Language Selection screen (I didn't go further as I didn't want to reinstall). Unfortunately it's a different model Acer, but might help.
