Wireless Dropping

Hi all,

 

We have recently upgraded all our laptops to Windows 10 LTSB, and ever since we are having big problems with the wireless dropping off.

 

Our wireless system is Ruckus ZoneDirector 3000, and most of our AP's are ZF7363's.

The wireless 5 or 6 times a day drops off, disconnecting Mapped Drives and printers etc. You can double click on the disconnected drive and it immediately reconnects.

The laptops are multiple different models, with different hardware, so I don't think its a driver issue.

I have disabled background refresh on group policies, so I don't think its that.

I have disabled all power management options and set to "High Performance", so don't think its anything to do with sleep mode.

 

I suspect, its something to do with the way Windows 10/Ruckus handle Roaming, but cant be sure any ideas on where to start looking?

My first instinct on this would be a driver issue but if you are saying this is happening on a range of different hardware then I agree, it's probably not.

 

We use Ruckus in-house here and everything is Windows 10. We havent had any issues like this at all and I've also not heard of such an issue with Ruckus and Windows 10 so I doubt that's it.

 

Are you clients actually seeing a drop in wireless connection itself or just losing drives etc? I wonder if it's possibly the Ruckus systems itself losing network connection?

Yeah the wireless signal just goes off, for about a second then comes back on, which is what made me think it might be a roaming issue.

I don't think its Ruckus itself, as it doesn't affect Windows 7 laptops. So unless there is some protocol that windows 10 uses that 7 doesn't, but Ruckus supports I don't think its a ruckus problem.

Although I have logged a support call with them, and are waiting a call-back.

With it only affecting Windows 10, machines and also only wireless. (If you plug them in with a cable they are fine). I am leaning toward a problem with how Ruckus/Win10 detects which AP to connect to, and jumping around.

Weird! not something I've come across with Windows 10 and Ruckus - having said that, Windows 10 never stops surprising me!

 

Is it a certain build of Win10?

Try disabling bluetooth, we had a similar issue with Win10 and this worked for us.

I had a similar problem and my issue was mapped drives was set to recreate in the GPO. I changed it to update and that sorted the issue out for me.

Changed the mapped drive option first as it was the easiest.

Will get on disabling Bluetooth, tomorrow try the easy option first.

When it connects is it connecting on 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz? When it goes can you use a wifi scanner to see if its missing on both frequencies?

Are you using NPS to authenticate your Wifi? Could be something to do with it.

What wireless chipsets are in the clients? The driver that ships with Windows 10 for Dell 1397/1510 wireless cards is bugged and will do exactly what you're describing - erratic pings, dropped connectivity, etc. Does it with 802.1x and even PSK security. I ran into this just last week after imaging a bunch of older laptops that use these cards. Anything with a Broadcom 4322 chip or maybe even in the same family will need the driver replaced.

If you're imaging Windows will still prefer the built-in Microsoft provided driver even if you add the working one from the link above. To get around this I removed the bad Microsoft driver from the driver store in my image.
