Sorry for the late reply, as you can imagine I have been very busy. There is some good advice here thanks.

BT want £9,000 to put DDOS mitigation in place or £1,900 which covers 1 attack, that is just too much so moving forward I think we are probably looking to go with a supplier who can host our firewall remotely such as SchoolsBroadband or a similar solution.

It just so happens that we are nearing the end of our current contract with BT so we just need to get through the next couple months somehow.

Business cloudflare package is only 200 dollars a month.

Cloudflare only really stops incoming services being hit using your published ip but if they kids get the real non cloudflare IP ourgoing requests are using they can just flood that IP and bypass the protection. Even if you block all incoming except cloudflare the firewall will still get hit with the bandwidth sadly.

Many education focused ISPs offer DDoS protection/mitigation and hosted firewall at no extra cost, or at least this should be the case! It is something that has been part and parcel of our connections for some time.

Ideally you want this done at the periphery of their network, to remove the congestion and performance issues these attacks create.

It’s worth exploring what activity monitoring and intrusion detections systems a provider has in place. How it allows them to detect and act on any unusual/malicious traffic across its network down to a site and system level.

SWGfL's service INCLUDES a centralised industry standard firewall to protect all network services (e.g. Cisco, Juniper), and schools can customise firewall rules without the overhead of running a local firewall device.

We also provide as standard, intrusion detection and prevention systems which provide unprecedented level of protection against malicious attacks such as DDoS.
