Many education focused ISPs offer DDoS protection/mitigation and hosted firewall at no extra cost, or at least this should be the case! It is something that has been part and parcel of our connections for some time. Ideally you want this done at the periphery of their network, to remove the congestion and performance issues these attacks create. It’s worth exploring what activity monitoring and intrusion detections systems a provider has in place. How it allows them to detect and act on any unusual/malicious traffic across its network down to a site and system level.
