Laptops - working offline/home

We until recently has a policy in place where if school laptops used by staff died, then they were not being replaced. (This was introduced by SLT)

 

Now it seems some staff have been going to SLT and getting approval to purchase laptops from departmental capitation

 

 

As many of the laptop predated my arrival and they were configured for "home" use and staff had full admin access.

 

 

If the laptop policy is changing, I would like to make sure they bring them into school for use etc...… which bring me to by "How do you do it...."

 

 

Never configured laptops for offline/online sync etc - anyone any guides/recommendations on the best way to this.

 

 

I've seen people mention direct access and offline files etc - so any help would be gratefully received.

Direct access work currently but is becoming an unsupported technology. they may choose to turn it off in an update - probably without warning.

 

One site uses a combination of offline files - it's a PITA - and DirectAccess which works generally quite well. The other site currently enforce a UYODAH system - Use Your Own Device At Home - Via RDS. Seems to be working fine. Literally, 3 members of staff have laptops on that site.

 

The site that uses laptops with offline files will cease to to do that when there machines go over to windows 10, they'll initially get DirectAccess but eventually I'll be phasing out laptops altogether as they die and going to fixed desktops.

 

Stopping using laptops for teachers has saved so much money and grief as they are both rough with them and a bit dim!

This was the view of SLT - well the money part - and since they all classrooms have a desktop and the staffroom has 24 desktops - it was deemed they all had access to a computer.

 

These staff who have had the ok from SLT have complained that they cannot do reports at home as they do not own their own computers!!

 

 

It might end up with the laptops setup as a "home" laptop which annoys the :censor: out of me!

 

 

I'll a play and see what SLT want to do.

In theory it should be possible to manage Windows 10 laptops with Azure/Intune, and encrypt them with Bitlocker if they have TPM chips. Though Intune costs money.
