What 10Gb NIC should I use in my ML350p

Is anyone using a 10Gb NIC in an HP ML350p Gen8 that they would recommend?

I'm planning an upgrade to 10Gb over the summer and am looking for a suitable 10Gb NIC for our ML350p Gen 8 running server 2012 (currently)

 

Any recommendations?

Ooh - would that work in an HP DL360p Gen8 as well? We're aiming to do the same, have one of our existing server be 10Gb capable.

The HP website is normally quite informative with specific models of network adapters (in this case). Sometimes you need to check what BIOS version you're using, but other than that it should be straight forward.

 

I think HP also offer 10GbE adapters, but I'd always recommend an SFP+ adapter, straight into your switch.

There's a big difference in price, but they are both using the same Intel controller. Any thoughts?

My rule of thumb is, if it's intel it'll be fine

The difference being it has 'proper' HP firmware installed, so will display its status in iLo most likely.

Must agree I only use HPE NICs in my HPE servers as they show in iLO, firmware is done via the SPP/SUM and the warranty is much simpler as you can usually just get it done under the main server than faffing for the card.

 

They are a few quid more usually but never the end of the world for such convenience and efficiency in management and error reporting.

10GBe - is that going to be Copper or Fibre?

 

You want to make it as easy and as compatible as possible. So what switches will be at the other end?

 

A DL380 to an HP Switch SFP+ by DAC is always best served with a genuine HPE adapter with a genuine HPE DAC cable.

 

We have however also used the Intel X520 DA2 in HPE Servers to all kinds of other switches with great success using DAC however with 10GBase T becoming so common now and copper so easy to manage in the rack this is my personal medium of choice now.

 

So work out what you have at each end and to connect and see what issues you might have to overcome as DAC (Twinax) cables are not cheap and adapters can be very fussy.
