dcwhitworth Posted June 13, 2018 Posted June 13, 2018 We’ve been suffering serious performance problems on our Windows 10 / 2016 network since yesterday lunchtime. Particular symptoms are – Slow login Very slow opening of documents on the network Downloads failing to start This seems to be independent of loading on the network. None of the servers seem to have a high CPU utilisation Network switches show no unusual traffic PCs show no unusual loading I’d be grateful for any thoughts.
witch Posted June 13, 2018 Posted June 13, 2018 Antivirus suddenly scanning everything? Happened to us once - every time anything happened to, or via the server, the antivirus started scanning everything
FN-GM Posted June 13, 2018 Posted June 13, 2018 I would check your DNS is working correctly. It is a classic symptom of internal network performance issues.

Happened to us once - every time anything happened to, or via the server, the antivirus started scanning everything Thanks. Thought about this, but don't think so. File servers are set to not do on access scanning. Tried turning all on access scanning off on some PCs and it didn't change.

techy32 Posted June 13, 2018 Posted June 13, 2018 Post application logs of the problem PC otherwise it is a guessing game...........
dcwhitworth Posted June 13, 2018 Author Posted June 13, 2018 Post application logs of the problem PC otherwise it is a guessing game........... It's a network wide problem, not a PC specific issue. There's no related info in the PCs log.
dcwhitworth Posted June 13, 2018 Author Posted June 13, 2018 My file server was set to not do access scanning either - but it did What AV were you using ? We're using Sophos. If it was checking things behind my back I'd expect to see some sort of loading on the server but I'm not.
techy32 Posted June 13, 2018 Posted June 13, 2018 It's a network wide problem, not a PC specific issue. There's no related info in the PCs log. Your PC boot up fine? How long it takes to boot to the login screen? The problem starts at login? How long it takes to login? Configure this for detailed logging Enable Verbose or Highly Detailed Status Messages in Windows We have gone through all these for the last few months before resolving the issue with WIM corruption.
psydii Posted June 13, 2018 Posted June 13, 2018 Also sometime a Wireshark capture can be revealing (for example making visible unexpected traffic, or patterns in the pauses of traffic - 200ms delay in responses from a server to connection attempts) Procmon also gives good insight into what a given machine is doing and how long it is spending doing it. 1
FN-GM Posted June 13, 2018 Posted June 13, 2018 Have you checked you don't have a loop on the network?
RichB Posted June 13, 2018 Posted June 13, 2018 Simple things I would check first: Has anything been installed in the last 24 hours? Has anything been changed in the last 24 hours? Loop back - check switches Disable AV - On the servers (briefly - not ideal but it will flag if thats the issue) is your SAN/NAS nearly at 100%? DNS records working? Forward and reverse replicating? If you can't find anything from the above: Look through Server logs Wireshark the network Start to isolate the ports/servers and the network after hours to narrow down which part of the network is causing the issue
dcwhitworth Posted June 13, 2018 Author Posted June 13, 2018 Thanks for the thoughts everyone, some useful stuff there. We've got something of a breakthrough in that students don't seem to be affected by the issue so it's looking like it might be a profile issue since staff are redirected and students aren't.
dcwhitworth Posted June 14, 2018 Author Posted June 14, 2018 This is doing my head in. Affects only staff and only on PCs they already have a profile on. Deleting local profiles seems to help but I have cases where it hasn't. I'm thinking it's something to do with folder redirects. I was thinking it was the AppData redirect but I turned that off for myself and it didn't help (though it did lose a load of settings). The baffling thing is that it seemed to come on all of a sudden, it would make more sense if it had occurred gradually. I just can't pin down anything that might have changed nor explain why this is happening at all.
Accura2k7 Posted June 15, 2018 Posted June 15, 2018 Dodgy switch? Dodgy HDD in the server that holds staff accounts? I was having issues with our internal daily backup taking more than a day to complete, investigate and found a click HDD in the NAS but was working enough for no errors to show up. Replaced drive, few hours for the backup again!
dcwhitworth Posted June 21, 2018 Author Posted June 21, 2018 Turns out it was mostly caused by iffy permissions on the staff home area share. A lack of traverse right which meant it was hanging for a while when trying to access profile / appdata type information. Mostly corrected but I'm not entirely happy with the performance still. Most of the shares are run via DFS and I'm not convinced its working properly, regardless it seems to be an extra layer of complexity that achieves very little so I'm planning on ditching it over the summer. Thanks to everyone for getting your thinking caps on and providing thoughts and ideas
Passat1983ICTech Posted June 22, 2018 Posted June 22, 2018 what drive have you got in your pc running windows 10 are they spiny drive or ssd what are the login times when you login for the first time and what is the second login like after this when have the short cuts on the hard drive pointing witch make login a, little bit quicker for us for stat and students on the downloads i would check your av software i am just putting ssd drive in are pc's at the minute i have login as me and a member of staff and a test account as well login time have been under 30 seconds
jhector Posted September 17, 2018 Posted September 17, 2018 We have exactly the same issue since start of term - home folder were moved to try and organise things a little better. We have even moved profiles back to where they are it's still slow. It's fine if your an admin, which makes we think it is permissions. However I have reset permissions as the previous settings by it's driving use nuts!

Our issue affected things like opening Office programs, took ages to open but was OK once it did. Was down to inability to access profile information. Are home areas / profile areas individually shared or hang off a higher level share ? If the latter do people have the rights to traverse from the share to their personal folder ?
