Ubiquiti EdgeSwitches may be even cheaper i.e. ES-48-500w. Certainly way to go if you don't need the whole Unifi Controller experiance and like access to a cli. You don't need the controller on 24/7 unless you are using it's captive portal.

 

I have 3 of these at home 2 X ES-16-XG and 1 X ES-24 . The 16 port 10Gb switches are way cheaper then any of the competion, yes they lack some features such as true stacking, advanced routing and redundancy for Routing VRRP etc. But are ahead in the other features that the basic 10Gb switches lack. The cheapest Netgear switch is the M4300 series that has stacking but is 3 X the cost of the ES-16-XG.

I do like the ol' Ubiquiti stuff, their Wireless gear and IP cams have been nothing but rock solid for us. Entirely set and forget.

 

I'm just waiting on their switches to get a bit more popular with a couple more years behind them and I'd happily switch for smaller businesses/schools! Once they get features like stacking sorted out they'll be real winners.

I have been using pretty much the entire unifi line for over a year now and don't regret the decision at all.

 

I have 47 switches in use a few spares on the shelf, 81 Access points, 10g edgerouter infinity, 8 of their CCTV Cameras and all my cab locations coming back to 2 "Core" 16 port unifi XG's (with 20gbps between the two xg's) We dont do anything spectacular with the config. I run 8 vlans in total and the whole thing flies! the Edgerouter is part of the edgemax line rather than unifi and you have alot of control on the edgemax range. As others have said the unifi line is more simplified but my own philosphy is we run big networks with little money and my skills and opinions & spend decisions have adaped over the years to make the most of what I have / can afford. if you want alot of control over config Edgeswitches are probably your best bet. I know their is definately a high value for stacking etc but I decided it wasn't worth the extra cost of a big brand for the additional features.

 

To give you some idea of my network on a normal day you will see in excess of 6tb of data shifted across the lan and 800gb+ of data pulled from the internet 1100 devices (lan and wlan) 10+ iscsi connections for the file shares on our Synology box's etc and 1k+ guests on the wifi.

The whole thing works really well.

 

I'd be interested in seeing a network map if that's at all possible?

 

I think i'd like to use them on my edge, but not sure about it's ability as a core.

 

What fault tolerance do you have on the XGs?

Just installed an EdgeRouter 4 as our internet gateway - seems to be running fine so far. Opted to completely disable the web interface and get down and dirty in the CLI for more control and features. The Edge series run a fork of VyOS if you want to have a play around. Don't think for a second this is a UTM that's capable of replacing the likes of Smoothwall, Sophos, Palo Alto etc. I wanted something relatively cheap, simple, reliable and dedicated to the job of being an Internet gateway though, and it works for that.

 

Our path looks like this at the moment: PC > switch > core switch (set as PC gateway then default route is this point to point to the ER4) > EdgeRouter-4 > SchoolsBroadband (MicroTik/off site filtering)

 

The EdgeRouter is doing our firewalling, policy-based internet routing (two ISPs), QOS for VoIP, routes our public IP subnet and terminates VPN for techs.
