Projector issue - Hitachi CP=A221N

Hello,

Getting an issue with a projector I have in my school, the issue started a few weeks ago and now it just doesn't turn on anymore. The power LED is static red and the lamp light is flashing red, I've tried cleaning the filters and even put in a replacement bulb to see if that resolves the issue but I just get the same LED status lights. Typically this projector was purchased via grants and cost small fortune at the time to install so ideally want to fix it myself if possible.

 

Has anyone experienced an issue with this projector model (Hitachi CP-A221N) or a similar model?

Have you tried leaving it powered off of the mains for a while?

 

We often find with our Hitachi’s that show those lights seem to sort themselves out after being unplugged from the power for a couple of minutes and then everything works fine.

We've got one that misbehaves sometimes (out of 4 Hitachi UST projectors and 3 standard throw projectors).

 

The hint that the supplier have me was to reset the filter hours when I clean the filter - this does seem to give me a couple of months between problems rather than a couple of hours... I have to admit it was a corner I tended to cut when I do my round cleaning filters. Worth a go if you're not doing it already.

 

It's been back under warranty a couple of times and they replaced a thermal sensor on one occasion.

 

The others I've got installed are slightly more recent models and have been fine. It's could be worth finding out whether the mounts are compatible. I installed them myself (the first one was a pig, but the install quote was about £1200 at the time). The UST projectors have also come down in price a lot - last time I looked it was around the £500 mark. Your projector must be around 5 years old - if you're not paying for another install, that might make replacement a bit more palatable.

I've had constant problems with the Hitachi's I unfortunately purchased (wish I never), weird bulb issues, incurable blurring issues, loss of brightness. All this on 1-3 year old models which of course are now out of warranty.

 

I'll NEVER buy a Hitachi again - and never recommend anyone else does. My advice would be to replace it with something actually good - I have had no issues with my Casio "Bulbless" ones and thinking back the Sanyos we had in the old Promethean days were actually bombproof most of them worked solidly for 5-8 years.

 

Ironically the only reason I bought Hitachis is because the budget was tight and I couldn't afford more Casios. What a mistake as I now have to buy the Casios anyway! Buy cheap, buy twice as an old wife once said!!!!

Had this when I hadn't fitted the lamp cover properly, removed and refitted it and it worked again

The ballast unit is prone to failure on some projectors...particularly Epson EB440 units for us.....and although a replacement epson ballast is only £40, it’s a nightmare to replace...

 

To be honest, our Hitachi projectors have been good purchases...had to replace gears on some A101 models which have a mirror which automatically folds down and up....but no lamp issues...

 

And we are experts at clearing the dust from SMart projectors when the colour wheel jams...

 

In the early days...we had to work quite hard to persuade teachers not to turn projectors off by the power switch...but use the remote....which of course they lost. The resulting premature failure would prompt us to nothing to replace the projector for an extended period of time citing poor usuage as an excuse....which resulted in other staff taking a lot more care....
