ATM's - still on Windows XP

My local Nat West had a 'new' internal ATM installed recently. I visited the bank today to pay some cheques in and was surprised to see this new machine being promoted by one of the staff who usually provides superb counter service. There was a pretty big queue and customers were being steered toward the new ATM.

 

Unfortunately, the machine and unexpectedly ate one customers cards and the member of staff had to get it to return the card. The next customer successfully paid cash in. Next I was funeled toward the machine. As the account I was paying into is a society account no card so the member of staff keyed the details in for me and fed the paying in slip and cheques in. Next the screen displays a flashing message - checking deposit, please wait or something similar. That went on for about three minutes. Next the ATM reboots and low and behold up pops the Windows XP logo!

 

I knew that Microsoft had an arrangement covering ATMs but thought that had expired long ago. After all we have moved through Windows 7 and various to Windows 10. I wonder when the banking industry will catch up with technology?

It might have been POS 2009. It is basically XP but it is still in support.

Fairly sure that shows "Windows Embedded" when the machine starts up.

I recall that prior to Service Pack 2, each edition of XP used to display it's edition name on the boot splash screen (i.e. Home Edition, Professional, Embedded, etc...) but for some reason by the time Microsoft released SP2, they decided to make the splash screen a universal one between all editions.

 

It's a bit misleading for those of us who still had devices that ran POS 2009 and get irritating comments from both staff and students in that we're "still using XP". I did recently upgrade all of our cashless tills to Windows Embedded 8.1 so that will have put a stop to that but still.

When they upgrade to Windows 10 embedded all your money will be securely held in OneDrive and you'll have to ask Cortona to withdraw it!
