snagrat Posted May 25, 2018 Posted May 25, 2018 We don't have a Layer 3 switch so want to know if do things this way would work. My concern would be around the wireless and if that side would work We have a router with 2 active interfaces on different IP ranges. One is the school's main internet the other is currently unused but does work. We have a layer 2 switch with all our machines plugged into plus the Ruckus Unleashed access points. If we used VLANs on the switch we would be able to separate the network so the different VLANs use the different interfaces on the router. This is what we want to do to offer guest access to the internet via the different interface. However, would the wireless be able to work like this? Could the ports used for the APs be used for both VLANs and then we would tag the SSID to the required VLAN?
Davit2005 Posted May 25, 2018 Posted May 25, 2018 You could look into router on a stick. What Make/Model Router is it? To be honest, I'd not normally want to do router on a Stick but it could be a workable option for Guest WiFi access as long as it is isolated from the rest of your network.
IrritableTech Posted May 25, 2018 Posted May 25, 2018 You don't even need to reconfigure your router technically. You can just use two connections to it, one using a switch port tagged in one vlan and another port tagged in the other vlan. If all you are offering is internet access then this should work fine. Will your router be able to provide a DHCP server for the wireless vlan? Your ruckus ports can be tagged in both vlans and should be able to separate the traffic. Do you want to be able to offer any internal services to wireless clients?
chazzy2501 Posted May 25, 2018 Posted May 25, 2018 Any PC with 2 or more NICs could be used as a router.. You could use Windows Server or go Linux DD-WRT .

nathan3388 Posted May 25, 2018 Posted May 25, 2018 If you have the ruckus controller you can tunnel all the vlan traffic down that you would only have to tag the internet port with which ever vlan you chose
