Real Player Enterprise

Somewhere a while back real agreeded that the free Real Player Enterprise could be used across an education network for free etc.

 

But recently been reports people getting calls saying they need to buy this license.

 

Can anyway point me in right direction where real said you are allowed to install it on school network..

RealPlayer Enterprise comes free as part of the Helix Server (search for Helix server on the net for details) and this can be distributed and branded.

 

Schools can use the standard client but with each installation it needs to have the registration element completed. This can always point to a single Real account but still requires registration.

 

The has been discussed on various JISC mailing lists as well as UK.Education.Schools-it. If I get chance to dig more out I will.

Like some other people on here I setup my machines and take an image for distribution.

 

Even though Realplayer is already registered on my image, do i still need to go around and register realplayer on each machine its installed on?

What are you using? If it's Real Player Alternative then check out the copyright strings on the DLLs it installs and ask if they are legally obtained from Real :-) If it's not that, then I'd be very interested in a legal Real Player

Nothing if you don't mind stealing. It's not really an "alternative" - they just "steal" the Real DLLs and repackage them.

We (Imperial College) use it internally - we run a Helix Server for streaming a variety of things and have just upgraded to the latest server and client.

 

Not sure who uses it for broadcast type stuff - is any of the BBC radio still using it?

Could have sworn I saw a post somewhere the other day saying that the BBC was moving their stuff off of Real format files. It's dead. Move along. Nothing to see here.

It isn't the Real formats I'm interested in, as such - I just want something for playing mpeg4 files. At present, the only thing which I have installed which does this in Real 11, and that can't be distributed so is useless to me.

Knowledgebox uses .ram for its resources, a real PITA as its the only thing we need it for.

Can VLC not play the files?

 

It plays everything i've thrown at it in the past.

Just been looking on AppDeploy at how much a PITA it's going to be to package Real Player for the occasional use, therefore, I'm wondering.

 

How exactly does Real Alternative work; it says when it's installed you can use a player of your choice so am I right in thinking I could use VLC?
