We already have Chromebooks and manage these in the Google Admin Console. I have seen an option to manage android tablets and android management licences appear to be possible to purchase. Is your link saying android tablets can't be managed in this way? Thanks

Thanks Not as Company Owned Devices no. I believe there are Android MDM features available within the new G Suite For Education Enterprise edition. Google have pretty much given up on Android tablets in education. ChromeOS tablets such as the new Acer are the way to go. 1

Sorry to ask a silly question but what do you mean by company owned devices exactly - is there a setup step to say its company owned? This says android can be managed via g suite for edu - https://edu.google.com/gsuite-editions/?modal_active=none. Is this different from the google admin console? I seem to have some options to manage android tablets in the google admin console but I'm just not sure of the capabilities as I haven't tried to manage an android tablet yet. I have seen the Chrome OS tablets and they look like a great idea. My problem is that my school now wants to ditch our Chromebook 1:1 scheme in favor of a cheap android tablet and the chrome OS tablets seem to be more expensive than the chromebooks we have been buying. Why do you say Google are giving up on android in education? If you have anymore info about that you can give me I would be really keen to read it before we go rushing into the above!
fiza Posted June 20, 2018 Posted June 20, 2018 With G Suite Education you can manage Android Devices by setting up Work Profiles on them. You cannot set them up as company owned where all Apps are controlled by you rather than the user. The work profile is like a sandboxed area on the device where you can deploy Apps that you want users to use. 1

A brief history of Android tablets: From galaxies to gravestones As we move on toward Android P, the market for Android tablets has all but dried up. There are some cheap devices from Asus and Huawei, as well as a handful of offerings from Samsung. However, there are no tablets that can run the P dev preview. That speaks volumes about Google's weariness for Android on tablets. We can't know exactly what Google will do, but the recent announcement of Chrome OS tablets is probably not a coincidence. Google has pushed to get the Play Store working on Chromebooks, so a slate device with Chrome OS could offer all the advantages of Android tablets with more features. Most apps aren't optimized for a big screen, but you can run them in windows on Chrome OS, and the operating system is much more capable from a productivity standpoint. Even the handful of Android devices with keyboards were no good for getting work done. I'm not saying Android tablets are completely dead, but they might as well be. Also, we just install the device profile app on the tablet and leave it at that. The device shows up in G Suite and you get password / wipe control etc. 1

I've ordered a few Huawei tablets to test with and waiting for them to be delivered.

Some success where we signed in with a school google account on the tablet and it gave us some options to manage it. The tablets would appear in the g suite console and gave us some basic options like wipe or device info. We decided against tablets in the end as we didn't think they would work well enough for our school.
