How did you strategically move from Win7 to Win10 (Roaming Profiles)

I'm a very new NM with only 5 years IT exp. I have never managed such a big project with approx 250 roaming staff profiles. We are looking to move to Windows 10 across the summer but not sure where to start.

 

I think I can handle the OS deployment and GPOs but not sure how to plan for staff profiles. I hate roaming profiles and would like to get rid of them but how do you plan such a huge project to coordinate with staff/SLT from roaming to local/mandatory?

Tbh, when it comes to profiles, as far as the end user is concerned they probably won’t notice much if any difference.

 

True story: I moved from roaming profiles and we decided to use UEV to roam settings for the important stuff. I forgot to turn it on for students. No one noticed. Profile types are probably one of the smallest things you have to consider. IMO.

Yeh likewise, we moved from roaming and mandatory profiles (win 7) to Local profiles all round (win 10)

 

At the end of the day SLT/SMT/Staff/Students dont care! they just want it to work! so plan carefully and make sure little if anything is affected. Redirection is key, the rest will fall into place with GPO's

We had roaming profiles for Win 10 but quickly scrapped them for local, the only thing that doesn't work is Outlook when they move PCs (unless it's already set up on that PC's local profile) - so it's just a case of them clicking Next on the wizard. (We try and get them to use the web based one instead).

There is an Outlook GPO setting to auto configure the e-mail profile based on the primary SMTP address held in AD. As long as you have autodiscover setup correctly (which you must have if users can just click next through the outlook startup wizard) then this will automatically create the email profile if it doesn't exist, without any user interaction.

It sure what you mean by “strategic” move...

 

We ran a mixed site while we migrated...but our gpo have never allowed anything but minimal user control of profiles...certainly no desktop configuration or praenomen pining of shortcuts.

 

Train...or at least email users well in advance ...explaining what differences they should expect. Most use win10 at home and have been for some years....but losing their “most recent” programs or files can lead to complaints of files not being on the new system.

 

Edge, can also be a surprise for users. Boot and logon times are noticeably slower,especially on older machines without Ssd...and 2gb of ram is probably not enough for 64 bit versions as even opening a web browser can cause a lot of paging and tardiness compared to 3 or 4 gab machines. We moved to 64bit at the same time...so some 16bit stuff finally got ditched...and we had to update some printer drivers...

Roaming profiles are pretty much depreciated in Win10. I'd go for local. Maybe UEV but it doesn't roam all settings. Win10 is designed for 1:1 really.
