I have been asked to find a large display digital clock for use in exams in the sports hall.

The intention is, if possible, for it to be displayed at the front of the hall, be visible from as far back in the hall as possible, be a count down timer so students know how much time they have left.

(It is surprising how many can not work that out from an analogue clock, or from their own watches, if they have one as they rely on their phones most of the time)

be easily set by the lead invigilator at the start of the exam and adjusted as required.

Can you project something from a laptop in there?

We don't have a projector in the Sports Hall so it would mean using a portable one which would be in the way of Exam desks.

How about some sort of Gym Clock? Some of them have remote controls for setting. The PE department might like it too #ShareTheBudgetSpend

That's the kind of thing I was thinking of but wanted to find out what others use to ensure I don't buy something that is no good.

Countdown and countup clocks are explicitly not allowed in the current version of the ICE booklet. I think this restriction is new this year.

Digital clocks are OK, and we got some really good big ones from CostCo, about £15 each, that are visible at the back of our Sports Hall.

I find the fact that students cannot tell time using an analogue clock unbelievable, but we have the same issue!

We have used a 32inch screen standing on top of a vaulting horse with a Windows 10 Intel Compute Stick attached running a clock app during our mocks. They want the same for the actual exams.

This solution was cheaper than an actual clock of the same size!

But why?! What on earth does being able to look at a clock and quickly work out that you've got 45 minutes left prove about how good your French is, or how good you are at painting? I can't see how it would be much help with a time calculation in a maths test either.

Thanks. I will pass that info on to SLT. Can I ask if you have a link to the Digital Clocks you bought from Costco? I can't seem to find any on their site.

Seems mad doesn't it!

Unfortunately I think it was one of these one time only things - they had a big pile of them at the Manchester store and our Exams Officer just happened to be there with the bursar getting a load of other stuff.

The next time we went they had all gone.

No PE Apparatus you could rig a projector from? We had some drop down wooden beams used for various PE purposes so dropped one down, rigged the projector round it and hoisted it back up and put the safety pins in the upright and it was great.

Part of the problem is now student can't take in a watch in case it a smart watch. I would find this off putting not having my normal watch to work from.

They can take in watches; the ICE leaves it up to the individual centres how to manage this. If they keep them they have to take them off and put them on the desk though - they cannot wear them.

Do all watches have to be put on the desk or just smart watches?

We use a projector put on the front exam desk projecting onto the front wall running a powerpoint slide with exams, numbers, start, finish and live clock. Displayed 6m x 6m so even the one at the very back can see clearly.

Which projector do you use for this?
