Students plugging in phones and disabling USB for all staff

This question has two points really but didn't think it warranted two posts.

 

1. How do you allow students to plug phones in to get photos off for something like photography? iPhones just don't show for students so they always have to come to us. Do you have to have itunes installed?
   
2. We are banning USB drives for all staff. Our digital photography department have raised the issue that they need access to memory cards for copying students photos / coursework images onto the network. Will I have to allow them USB access but strict policy (as there will be anyway) in place or is there a way to ban USB but allow memory cards?

Memory cards and USBs fall under the same boat really, you can restrict both but if you are going to unblock memory cards for a specific group you might as well keep USB sticks unblocked too.

Getting images from phones: When I have an image on my phone I want to use I will typically send it to myself in an E-Mail, or upload it to my Google Drive.

We use Netsupport DNA to control our USB usage. You can set different policies for different machines. You can register devices before they are plugged in or allow staff to request access. You can also approve by computer or user. Memory cards and USB fall under the same category.

I thought that the images would show on an iPhone as long as the phone is unlocked. Regarding your number 2, there's not likely to be a technical way to do this, so this will have to be an exception to your policy, eg Art may use a media reader to read SD cards (inc microSD) purely for the purpose of copying/moving photos from camera memory card to PC. You could clarify this by saying that memory cards must not be used to store school related material apart from photos stored on there by the camera.

You could enforce readonly instead of an outright ban. Sounds like you need cameras to be readonly anyway.

We have bitlocker in read only mode so memory cards can still be read and uploaded. Normally you will not be copying anything on to a camera sd card so this works out ok.

Same as what @DaveP says. I always send photos from my iPhone to my email address
