Hi all,

 

Is there a way of using the raspberry pi for digital signage , we currently run xibo for our windows device however online forums says the pi isn't supported or it's too difficult.

Any suggestions other than screenly help as we're looking for a free alternative

The IT guy before me set up Screenly on a raspberry Pi. I'm pretty sure its free. No idea how it all integrates but it seems to work well. If anyone knows if any instructions regarding the setup it would be much appreciated. It works well for is I'd just panic if it went down. Somehow it has a static IP and I can log into it from a browser. Edited by ReverentCreature

I set a Pi up recently using the Linutop OS. There is a general version and one which is optimised for signage and kiosks. It was really easy to set up and all the options etc are configurable via the GUI so no annoying 'sudo-ing!' or editing/creating config files... Works great. I used google sites to create the info screen with embedded Google docs and a Google Slideshow that are nice and accessible for our Office staff to edit.

We found that Xibo, Screenly etc never quite did what we wanted or seemed to be overly complicated. Nowadays with the sort of technology available on the web it seemed silly not to just do it ourselves. I setup a web page on one of our webservers exactly how we wanted it, using Javascript and PHP to pull in data from all sources like Integris, BBC news, weather etc. Now we just have Chrome automatically open on boot and display this site :)

 

If you know HTML/CSS/JS/PHP it's the way to go IMO, it removes all the reliance on external services.

We just set up some Raspberry Pis to replace our xibo system. Really quick and easy to setup.

 

Download Screenly OSE (Free open source version)

 

Flash SD card with Screenly image.

Power up Pi with network cable.

Navigate to IP address provided by Raspberry Pi GUI.

Manage contents of screen on web dashboard.

 

We use a combination of google slides and static images for posters. For the posters we set an expiry date which will stop that asset from being shown after a specific point.

We also placed a few google scripts into the slides to automate some calendar events, which keeps the information on the screen relevant.
