Just bare in mind a heated version using up to 400w running 24/7 is going to send your leccy bill up 2 - 3 quid a day

 

Yeah, I think that from my research the heater only kicks in at loft temperature @ 5 C, so it's not 24/7 (although WINTER IS COMING) and that it's automatic although it can be adjusted manually (at least on the Nuaire I read about).

 

There's just no nice central landing area to put it in a bungalow, so it's going to be blowing cold air directly into a living space. I know the heater is only going to take the edge off, but probably worth it.

Agreed. Last thing you want in winter is to be blowing freezing cold air from the atic back into your living area.

We had one on the landing it reduced humidity and made it feel warmer the solid walls were warmer to the touch. The heating was quicker to warm up rooms as well.

Well, this is weird, the PIV unit in my attic, which hasn't worked since I moved in 8 years ago has suddenly fired up.
I have no idea how to turn it off!

Depends on the model...

 

Either a control unit on the wall nearby, a control panel under the vent or on the unit in the loft.

 

Not knowing anything about your house I'd have to presume it was either always 'on' just waiting for the right conditions (although I'd be surprised if that hadn't happened in 8 years), or the sensor was covered, or maybe some power has been restored.... mine has a lot of settings, depending on the humidity, temperature in the house, temperature in the loft, etc. So most of the time it was 'on' but not 'on on' (actually running).

 

Funny thing about ours was, I knew it was a good thing as we had one in the last house (whish I'd  kept it, but didn't want to leave a massive hole in the landing ceiling), so bought a new one and installed it. As the new house had been empty a long time we had a lot of initial condensation, but after installing the PIV it had gone in a week or so.... so I turned it off and haven't noticed any condensation coming back so left it's been off ever since (nearly a year ago now).

Well, I went up in the attic, and it was indeed working (like I couldn't get it to do). I tried tripping the house mains just to put it in an off state, which worked for about 45 seconds before it sprang back to life.
What seemed to work was my opening the cover on the sensor which is on my sons old bedroom ceiling, which made it switch off.
Before it came back on again.
I then managed to set the speed to minimum, which didn't seem to make a difference to the fan speed. It has (just) now gone off though.
I did find an installation sticker whilst I was in the loft though and it says it was installed in 2004.

As an addendum, it came back on again after I posted my last. It eventually went off when I removed the sensor cover and replaced it. No idea at all what happened there!
