Hi All,

How do you all keep up to date with technology, more specifically in education? Browsing this forum has definitely taught me a lot over the years as well as visiting the Bett Show annually, but is there any other avenues that you explore to ensure you are kept up to date with changes / best practices etc.

Thanks

Keeping The Register: Sci/Tech News for the World on my phone's browser launch page - pretty much on there every day which usually reveals breaking news in the tech world. It helped with the ransomware outbreaks as the vaccine files appeared on there well before a lot of the AV vendors picked it up. Also tech update webinars, events etc. can be useful to keep an eye on new product launches, features and so on.

Also a big fan of the Register. I guess a lot of the skills we use in Education are transferable so learning about changes in the Tech world in general should apply to us as well.

Agreed. Often there are things that industry does well that education could learn from. That said, there are plenty of things that many businesses do not do well, that education tends to.

I'm a bit of a fan of sites that offer RSS feeds, and I collated several sites onto a public page I share with my team on netvibes.com. Handy to quickly eyeball lots of sources in just a few seconds. Got various tabs for news (bbc news technology & the register), most recent ofsted reports for our local authority, education news from guardian and bbc, various suppliers like office 365 education blog, supplier twitter accounts, feeds from other edutech sites aimed for teachers (albeit a lot are advertorials) etc. Oh yeah, also a RSS widget for all new edugeek threads too :)

However netvibes only updates a couple times a day though for some unpopular sites, so not always up to the minute.

Absolutely - the worst thing is to get caught inside an education bubble. Always keep an open mind of what's out there and apply the best bits to your own environment :)
