Arthur Posted March 20, 2018 Posted March 20, 2018 Source: Microsoft (via petri.com) For Server fans, today is a big day as Microsoft has announced that Windows Server 2019 will be coming in the second half of this year and it will focus on hybrid, security, application platform, and hyper-converged infrastructure. In addition, a preview of the new software is available today for those that want to dive ahead of general availability. As expected, Server 2019 is built on-top of Server 2016 which the company says is the fastest adopted server version in the company’s history. The next-gen Server OS will bring cloud and on-premises close together with new hybrid scenarios. When Server 2019 is released, along with Project Honolulu, this will make it significantly easier to integrate with services like Azure Backup, Azure File Sync, disaster recovery, and much more. Security with Server 2019 focuses on protection, detection, and response. This include features like shielded VSM now support Linux VMs and with the addition of Encrypted Networks; this lets admins encrypt network segments with the push of a button to protect the network layer between servers. To address detection and response, with Server 2019 Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection is being embedded into the operating system. The benefit of this is that it provides customers with access to deep kernel and memory sensors to improve anti-tampering and faster response time to new threats. One thing to note about this release is that it will be a Long-Term Servicing Channel release which means that it will be supported for 5 years of mainstream support and 5 years of extended support. gshaw Posted March 21, 2018 Posted March 21, 2018 HTML 5 on RDS here we come (so I hope). That's meant to already be out on the latest 2016 builds but MS slipped on the release it seems (along with proper O365 integration, although I've worked around that using Azure AD Application Proxy) 1

ThatBoringBloke Posted March 22, 2018 Posted March 22, 2018 Only just planning on moving to 2016 for the next 5 years in the summer. I always like to stay one version behind the latest and greatest anyway. (lets others find out all the faults and issues leaving me with a nice stable system!)
Fazza Posted March 22, 2018 Posted March 22, 2018 Microsoft keep talking more and more about Linux in their Server OS's, even more so with Server 2019 but I'm not really sure if it's simply that they're adding a bit of Linux code to Server 2019 so you can run certain commands or if there is a full blown Linux OS lurking somewhere meaning that you could actually install a Linux based system within 2019 without having to install a Linux OS on your server?

Probably sometime around September/October 2018. www.theregister.co.uk/2018/03/20/windows_server_2019_to_launch_in_2018_and_replace_2016/ Redmond says Server 2019 will actually be landing in 2018, as its release to general availability is set for the second half of this year. Microsoft says the first builds of the new Server OS are already being pushed into the Windows Insider channel.
