Moving Sims to Virtual next week - using VMware and Veeam

Recommended Posts

Hi,

as the title says, were migrating our 2008 R2 Physical Sims to Virtual next week, just wondering if anyone using Vmware and Veeam can share there backup schedules and any gotchas

I have the VM backing up nightly and also replicating to a DR site (on site) at lunch time

The VM on Veeam has application aware processing enabled.

Thanks

Hello,

I have never had any problem with running my SIMS on vmware.

I done a P2V conversion in 2009. I do a nightly backup to 2 separate location with Veeam.

I still have the normal SIMS backup routing running which backups up the databases. These I then have a scheduled task move to another location.

I cant think of any ‘gotchas’ that have put a spanner in the work. Which has now probably put a curse on it 

Coincidentally, we had our LEA SIMS Support engineer in last week discussing similar (e.g. reviewing backup / recovery / migration options etc).

The outcome of which, is that we will be configuring a fresh VM (Hyper-V) server installation (Server 2016) with SQL 2016 and migrate the database(s) across etc.

We were advised that SIMS needs to be on SQL 2016 by Summer. Currently using SQL 2012, although this will still be required for the initial SQL migration process.

Finally, be advised to ensure that you use Capita supported methods of backing up the SIMS DISCOVER database (if you use it?). (We also use RedStor which is) Apparently it's something to do with the way this database is configured and a 'normal' SQL backup is not suitable / compatible (?) you only find out when attempting to recover.

I am sure a 'physical to virtual' conversion will work fine too; but knowing what we know now and what is needed by Summer; for us, it makes sense to start with a fresh (server) installation which we are currently doing.

Hope this helps, and I am sure others will assist / advise.

Hi

We have done it few times..

Physical sims to virtual sims and last time moved virtual sims onto a physical box.

New physical server ( sims 2) and join as a member serve. OS Windows 2012 R2, SQL 2012

Migrate sims database to new server ( kick everyone out from sims/fms/discover)

I do backup onsite and offsite . In your case veeam will do the job

Office 2010 support ends in with the SIMS Summer 2018 release, SQL 2012 was due to end SIMS support in Spring 2019 but this has just been extended
