Hi all

quick question, can we check if key logging is enabled for particular user? I have been told to enable for some students and wanted to ensure they are not aware of it?

Can this be same for staff too? as HR have asked me to check if the staff can check?

my second question is wouldn't it be illegal to allow such for staff? Of if they are told we can use keylogger in advance for any checks then are we covered? I want to cover my back, obv this will be actioned only once HR gives me go ahead via email but wanted to know some information beforehand so ia m prepared in advance.

Always been hesitant to use keylogger for staff or students

Not sure on the actual legal issues when it comes to keyloggers but I am fairly sure that the person you are "keylogging" needs to be told that they are otherwise it's invasion of privacy. They could be writing something personal to someone while on a work machine which is not in your legal right unless you tell them they are always being monitored.

If you're targetting specific people (keylogger, hidden camera in their office) for an increased level of surveillance, you have to have a good reason why and it should be for a limited time only. You (HR) need to do an impact assessment and monitoring should be proportionate to the issue the employer needs to address.

See: https://ico.org.uk/media/for-organisations/documents/1064/the_employment_practices_code.pdf page 74

Mass surveillance (look at everyone, everyone knows you're doing it - say internet filtering, CCTV on the premises) is treated differently, provided you've got an AUP that explains this happens and people have signed it.

TLDR: get your ducks in a row or you're scuppered.
