UPN Suffix to resolve issue

Hi all,

 

I have the following issue:

 

I have an internal domain, 'schoolname.internal' which feeds up to an office 365 tenancy via RM Unify using AD Active Sync. The tenancy domains within Office 365 are obviously different as they are, 'schoolname.localcouncil.sch.uk' and 'abbreviatedschoolname.co.uk'. Now I want to be able to manage internal documents using Rights management within Office 365.

 

In order to do this I need the account used to log into local Office install to be the same as one of the tenancy domains used (at the moment if you look at the account logged in local word it uses the '[email protected]' account). Now I could change the internal domain name, but by all accounts that would be a massive pain in the arris, so, it looks like I can create a UPN suffix (e.g abbreviatedschoolname.co.uk) within AD and then change people's logins to be the new suffix e.g. [email protected].

 

Has anybody had any experience of doing this? if so, did you have any problems? if not can anybody see a problems or issues I may face with doing this?

We added UPN suffixes to all our staff and student accounts to match our Office365 tenancy domain name to allow us to correctly map our local AD accounts set as school name.internal to our Office365 tenancy for Azure AD Connect to work correctly.

 

Didn’t notice anything different or any issues it simply worked thankfully.

Yeah it’s fine to do, doesn’t cause any issues, it’s just an alias after all, Have a search on here, there are plenty of people who have done it.

It will just change their O365 logon. Would tell people before hand

Thanks for all the replies guys! sounds very easy so far. Couple more questions I've thought of. Will there need to be any DNS changes made anywhere? If so, as we have a school website hosted externally which will be the same as the UPN suffix, would this cause any issues? (I can't imagine so, but thought I'd ask just in case).
