Lenovo Quality Issues

Has anyone else had issues with Lenovo Latops?

I currently have 4 Lenovo machines all purchased around a between 1 and 2 years ago, out of these I've had to: RMA one unit twice for a failed Touchpad then Failed LCD (then keyboard stopped working as ribbon cable came loose), Replaced the BIOS battery in a 2nd one less than a year old after it kept restting, Replaced a WiFi card in a 3rd and now the 4th has just Failed 1 month out of warranty. just managed to get it back on after stripping down and reassembling (Looks to have been LCD cable seating).

 

Its just ridiculous for this to happen though, don't think I'd touch another one!

Are they their business grade laptops or home grade ones? The is a big difference in the duty cycle of both types - if it's a business grade one then I'm surprised as they have roll-cages inside them and have all sorts of tests run on them to make them very strong.

Mix of B50, E50 and V100 series, either way i don't think you should face these issues

The B50 and successor E50 are both entry level home grade pieces of kit - basically designed for light surfing and directly rivals the Dell Inspiron 3000 series and your HPs with just the numbers (e.g. HP 250). Agreed you shouldn't have issues like that, but from experience, low priced home grade kit (even if they do give you Windows Pro) really doesn't cut it. If it gets knocked around, then things break on them, because thats where they cut the costs.

 

Never had any problems with the proper thinkpads (X and T Ranges), or the Dell Latitude 5/7000 series devices.

We have had issues with ThinkPad laptops. The base where the hinge screws into kept breaking. Lenovo argued that was damage every time (even though its a know fault) and wasn't interested in fixing the issue on the rest of them.

 

We dumped them in the end with warranty still remaining.

I’ve seen a whole batch of Thinkpad SL500 laptops suffer hinge failures and the Acer Travelmates favoured by one of my clients at the last place were absolute darlings for failed hinges too... both theoretically business grade gear... sadly even some of the Tier 1 manufacturers drop the odd clanger every now and then on business grade gear. That being said my own Thinkpad L420 has been bulletproof. Edited January 30, 2018 by davethetekkie

These things happen, it's about how the company puts it right.

 

We had Dell in replacing 100 motherboards due to capacitor issues. Was a little bit of a pain but they put it right.

I've had all Lenovo over the years. SL510's retired in favor of E550's have been the Thinkpad windows line. I still have some of those SL510's in service for lighter work loads.

We have N21's and N22's Chromebooks. N22's did have a design flaw in their keyboard.

 

I did have one consumer grade in service a G770 the hinges broke after 6 years.

 

Anything in large enough quantities and you will find defects. I've found the HDD not held in with all the screws (E550), not an issue. I've had to re seat touch pad / keyboard cables, LCD cables etc.

Most of the cable re seats are on the Chrome models after they have been in students hands for a while.

 

The only serious recurring issue I've had was the N22 keyboards, but they are taking care of me on that.

The T series are the only ones I've not experience issues with - the B50 series is OKish but not as sturdy as the T or X series and dont get me started on the SL series (too many issues with them)!

We have bought a mixture of some HP 250 and Lenovo B50's and not had any problems, but the so called educational laptops from a major educational supplier which cost nearly a 3rd more were a bad buy and has put me off asking them again, they were falling apart and the motherboards in nearly all of them had to be replaced along with a an extension of the warranty after I complained.

We have also had problems with some of the Lenovo laptops such as track pad, a few with Wi-Fi cards. Recently purchased a few HP G6 laptops they have been excellent.

My Yoga 460 has been pretty bulletproof so far a year in. My boss has the equivalent consumer version that's had to be sent away for two warranty repairs in the same time. All because he wanted the flash chrome hinges...

It's pretty much been said already. But you really get what you pay for with Lenovo.

 

Buy their T or X series and you can count on a terrifically tough device, but buy the B series or similar and you're going to be looking at all manner of problems over time.

 

We don't touch those here. Even older T series like the T430 that is my day to day work machine are tougher and apparently less likely to have issues.

My old X230 has cracks and missing rubber feet. I wouldn't call that top quality, personally. My older D430 and D830 are almost rock solid, and I've yet to acquire a T400 or a T60 to compare, because those were tanks.

My lenovo T410 is a rock, wouldnt swap it for owt; well maybe the dell d830 i built from scratch but moron here sold that Proper resolution too, 1920x1200

There was a 1920x1200 D830? I have the 1680x1050 version. The fan's been replaced but it kind of hums and not sure how to solve that.

Latitudes were pretty much interchangeable, at least back then. Mine was built from Dell "scrap" parts as they were very wasteful, if an engineer went on site to resolve a laptop issue and took some parts with him just in case such as a new mainboard, LCD etc, if they didn't get used, they got scrapped. I'm sure there would have been a 1920x1200 panel version though, it had a quadro GPU so more than enough grunt. Was the quickest available c2d processor and 8gb of ram

Small mistake on my part then, that was an 820 Identical chassis though. Wonderful build quality unlike many of these cheaper lenovos and toshibas which seem to guarantee the loss of 50% of the screws within 6 months
