Outlook 2016 - Disappearing attachments when forwarding email

Hi everyone,

I have a user that has complained of attachments disappearing from a received email when forwarding them.

I have remotely accessed their machine to take a look at this and saw that upon pressing the forward button the attachments did actually disappear, as a test I sent an email to the user with an attachment (simple text file) and then forwarded this to another user and this time the attachment remained as part of the email.

After looking at the original email and asking some questions I found that the emails where the attachments are disappearing are originally being sent by an iPad user using the built in mail app. I have also checked the setting within outlook that states to "Include original message text" when forwarding an email and this is selected. The user is able to save the attachments and then attach them again to the email that is being forwarded and the email will send with the attachments as normal.

The user is using a windows 10 machine with outlook 2016

Does anyone know what could be causing the attachments to be removed?

Thanks

HAVING TROUBLE FORWARDING EMAILS WITH ATTACHMENTS IN OUTLOOK?

Group IT have become aware of an unforeseen technical issue resulting from a security update issued by Microsoft on the 09 January 2018. After your machine installs the update, attachments are removed when you forward plain text emails. While Microsoft are researching this issue they have provided two ways to work around the problem.

Workaround 1

Save the attachment you want to forward locally on your machine. You can then reattach and send the email.

Step 1: Save the attachment(s) to a temporary location on your machine.

Step 2: Open the email you wish to forward, then select Reply, Reply All or Forward.

Step 3: Add the attachment(s) that you saved in step 1.

Step 4: Send the email.

Workaround 2

Open the email containing the attachment you want to forward in a new window and drag the attachment into the forwarding email, without saving locally.

Step 1: Double click on the email containing the attachment to open it in a new window.

Step 2: Go back to your original Outlook window, select Reply, Reply All or Forward.

Step 3: From the new window you opened in step 1, drag the attachment into the forwarding email.

Step 4: Send the email. The attachment is now in the original email for forwarding to your recipient without you needing to save it locally.

Thanks everyone,

Everything you put confirms what I thought about it being a problem with the original email format i.e. text format so hopefully this will be resolved soon when the update from MS is rolled out.
