Folder Size Tree for students

does anyone use a nice, reasonably priced folder size software?

 

Ive looked at Treesize Pro (£££) and FolderSize (requires some write access to C:), windorstat (ugly) none of which really suitable.

 

Any more ideas?

Please can you explain a little more about what you want to achieve? If you want to allow students to easily see how much space they're using then a mapped drive + disk quota will show them.

Needs Java, but JDiskReport – JGoodies . Not sure what permissions it needs as i'm the only person who uses it.

thanks, it needs to be a breakdown of sizes, like an expandable tree where they can see size of each folder. TreeSize pro is great but its really expansive every year.

I think there is a portable version you make be able to shove on a share too.

Have a look at Scanner. I've not used it with students here, but use it a lot myself. No installation required (it's a portable app) and a reg entry will add it to the right-click menu in Explorer.

If you can get your hands on foldersize 2.8.0.0, it is a great tool and up to this version you could also check the sizes of mapped network drives for free.

I like foldersize but found students need write access to a folder in c program data. Not ideal really. Did you find this?

@petben I was wondering if you've thought about the IO on your storage when a class full of kids run the software at the same time? Assuming that might happen of cause.

Stumbled across this while looking at other topics from a google search and figured I'd register to contribute something.

I've been using WizTree by AntiBody. It's very similar to TreeSize and I've found it to be much quicker but it's also free. They just ask for donations which is reasonable.

Thanks I looked at that, what a mental graphic in the bottom pane eh? With all these suggestions I cant find one that doesn't offer to view\scan all my network drives that are hidden by GPO.

I know you mentioned WDS as ugly, but it might be worth you looking at the modification ZH did that allows scanning only the area the shortcut pointed to (e.g homepath)
