iLO for a Desktop?

Hi folks,

 

Is there something like iLO for a desktop? Specifically I need to be able to remotely turn off and turn on a PC via the Internet. Ideally something as cheap as possible, but not sure if any mobos have this.

Intel vPro might be worth a look, or a KVM over IP, or add in a remote reboot port (turns power outlet off on)

Another possibility seems to be a motherboard and CPU that supports vPro (Intel AMT) e.g. ASUS Q170M-C and an i7-7700 (can't be the K version).

 

Albeit a bit of an expensive solution.

A NUC would work, although the NUC5I5MYHE was the last model to feature vPro/AMT.

You can sometimes pick them up for ~£137-£300 if you don't mind a second hand/refurbished vPro NUC.

 

I don't quite understand why Intel removed vPro from newer models. It doesn't make any sense.

 

Dell and Lenovo also have ultra small form factor PCs with vPro, but these can be quite expensive. e.g.

 

• Lenovo ThinkCentre M910 Tiny
  
• Dell OptiPlex 7050 Micro
  

At least they come with RAM, SSD, an OS and a recent processor though.

 

I wonder if @ICTDirect_Dave has anything suitable?

Another option is a second gen Core M5 Intel Compute Stick...

... or an IP KVM like @kmount mentioned. It's difficult finding one which doesn't use Java however and isn't stupidly expensive however. e.g.

If you are looking for an SFF sized machine, the HP Compaq 8300 has Intel AMT on the I5 models (not sure about I7 ones though). The I5 models can be picked up for just over £100 on ebay.

After doing a bit more research it looks like Intel has a separate line of NUCs for businesses that have vPro. The part numbers for the 7th gen Core i5 Kaby Lake models are:

The difficult with WoL is when the machine gets stuck rebooting. That's when iLO is really handy, so something equivalent to that would be ideal, as long as it's Internet accessible.

Just discovered the £150 HP dc8200s we got from ICT Direct have AMT, so using https://www.meshcommander.com/ to remotely control them, no more touching desktops, or needing to go into IT rooms (after you mess around in the bios for ages: enable amt, pick reset/unprovision, reboot, ctrl-p, default pw admin, set a new pw, and enable network)
