Backup Issue

Hi,

 

First post on here.

 

I have been having an issue on our school server with it completing backups. Originally the server was running 2012 and using Windows Backup. This caused an issue where every few days when it was saving the hyper v it would just hold and not complete the jobs and make all the virtual machines stop working. The only way I have found to correct this is to restart the DC! Since then I have clean installed the server to 2016 and installed veam. All seemed fine but the same error is back! On veam I can see it holds at the creating VSS Snapshots and 14 hours later when I login to check it is still running this bit.

 

I have run vss list writers and all permissions are fine none have failed. There also seems to be no pattern it will pass for days and then randomly fail, or pass for days then fail on consecutive days. Its driving me mad and the school!

 

Any help would be appreciated.

How much free storage is there on the host? Could it be this when it's creating snapshots?

More importantly how much space in the hidden partition that the backups use? We had to increase ours (on new installs obviously) to 1GB instead of 350MB as we found out WSB snapshots used that part of the hard disk to do it's backups.

I have had a look this morning and can tell you the following:

 

DC - c: 222gb free 278gb

d: 1.42tb free 2.18tb

 

Virtual Machine 1 - c: 53.9gb free 82.2gb

d: 89.3gb free 117gb

 

Virtual Machine 2 - c: 60.4gb free 71.5gb

d: 87.7gb free 87.8gb

 

Virtual Machine 3 - c: 75.4gb free 149gb

 

Virtual Machine 4 - c: 138gb free 159gb

 

Virtual Machine 5 - c: 244gb free 255gb

 

Virtual Machine 6 - c: 127gb free 139gb

 

Virtual Machine 7 - c: 83.7gb free 125gb

 

There are also 2 virtual machines turned off.

 

In terms of the disks on the DC C: has a 500mb system reserve, The backup drive has 20mb unallocated and the data drive has no partitions.

That's the one I was on about! Just couldnt recall what it was called. We had to ensure ours were in excess of 500MB (we found 1GB) stopped any similar errors occorring. We had to use some partitioning software on our Hyper-V Hosts that VMs were being backed up on to change to 1GB and then the errors went away.
