Google releases web app version of Chrome Remote Desktop

Google is trying to phase out Chrome Web Store apps, in favor of more modern (and cross-platform) Progressive Web Apps. One of the most well-known Chrome apps is Chrome Remote Desktop, a remote management tool similar to VNC or TeamViewer. While it was originally designed to give Chromebooks a proper remote desktop application, it has also become popular as a TeamViewer alternative.

 

Today, Google has launched a beta of a new web-based Chrome Remote Desktop. Not only is it fully online, but it also has a brand new interface.

Google Chrome Remote Desktop web app exits beta and replaces aging Chrome app

 

Google has been working with developers to gradually kill Chrome apps to replace them with Progressive Web Apps, which are easier to build and work across platforms. It's only natural for the company to do the same with its own software, as it is now encouraging users to switch to Chrome Remote Desktop's web app.

 

The service has actually been available since 2017 as a beta test, but it's now exiting this phase to replace the aging Chrome app. Chrome Remote Desktop can now be accessed directly from a webpage, which lets you remotely control another device, receive support on your computer, or help out a distant person. Although everything is managed from your browser, you still need to download an extension locally to get help and grant access to your machine, which only works with Chrome. However, if you're the one providing support, you won't need to install anything and can directly interact with the other computer straight from your browser.

 

In additional to being convenient, the web version brings some improvements, including better support for multiple displays, and file transfers are also coming soon. Google will end support for the Chrome app on 30 June and has already started telling users to switch to the browser-based one instead. Don't worry, though, the mobile applications are still available and won't be turned into web apps anytime soon!

Been trying this but can't get it to work on works PC, something is blocked but not sure what ports or URLs need unblocking. We use external firewall

Same here. I'd like to get this working too, but can't see what I need to unblock...

The only way I could get this working was to unblock all UDP traffic to Google's IP ranges:

 

 

• 64.233.160.0 – 64.233.191.255
  
• 66.102.0.0 – 66.102.15.255
  
• 66.249.64.0 – 66.249.95.255
  
• 72.14.192.0 – 72.14.255.255
  
• 74.125.0.0 – 74.125.255.255
  
• 209.85.128.0 – 209.85.255.255
  
• 216.239.32.0 – 216.239.63.255
  

I also unblocked outbound traffic on TCP ports 5222, 5223, 5228, 5269, 5280, 5281, & 5298.

 

Still see a load of stuff being blocked related to "GoogleDuo" on the Sophos SG box, but it doesn't seem to break it.
