I had a user today that wanted to download some files from another schools onedrive (we don't use it)

 

Unfortunately, we block the download of ZIP files so had to add the sharepoint url into teh whitelist (but that didn't work)

 

When downloading a complete folder (which comes as a ZIP) it was being blocked at: northeurope1-mediap.svc.ms

 

Curious to know where this is, it's location/IP shows as being in north america.

 

Can this be clarified as appears the data is NOT within the EU?

It also depends when you signed up. The UK data centers are more recent than the other European ones so may not have been an option at the time of sign up for their tenancy.

IMO that's regardless in retrospect to DC geo-locations

When going through the azure backup signup process you can choose your data cenrte eg London, Northen Europe etc. Not sure what's it's like for O365.

Can anyone just clarify if what i'm stating above is true that they've just downloaded data from outside the EU and from the US as this surely goes against the regulations of storing data in the EU and GDPR ?

If you're doing an IP lookup it'll ignore the location part so isn't really a fair account.

 

As an example using - https://www.iplocation.net/

However try the same on any other location name on that domain and it's the same

IP address geolocation is only any good for a rough idea - a company like MS have a large bank of IPs. Once they've got them, they can be used anywhere. So, its quite possible that you see an MS US IP in the EU.
