Can anyone please explain to me (or point me in the right direction to information on) how licencing for Office 365 works

We have the following licences:

  1. Office 365 A1 for faculty
  2. Office 365 A1 for students
  3. Office 365 ProPlus for faculty

All I want to do is deploy Office 365 via SCCM but have no idea what licences we need and trying to get any sense out of MS just makes it worse.

For instance, how come some people have 1 million of the 365 education student (faculty) licences, when I tried to use the self sign up page, users just get assigned the Office 365 A1 licence (I keep reading that they should get the newer licence). Some people get the A1 Plus licence (!?).

Help because I am about to (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻)

It's all changed recently again as they renamed it all, but basically:

A1s = All your normal web-based stuff, emails/onedrive etc, you normally get these when you subscribe for OVS and you tell your reseller how many you want. (Not local Office installs)

ProPlus = Office installs mainly (but also if you choose a few of the web-based bits you need to link Office into) - Again linked with OVS

A1 Plus = Self sign-up, unlimited licenses but people access them via sign-ups (to activate the service), the problem is that means they enable all services which you might not want them to do, so we disable these licenses and don't use them at all (We disabled the self-sign up option too)

If all you want is a regulated and controlled setup, ignore A1+ and just use A1+ProPlus :p (disclaimer for fussy people, ok you cna control a1+ too but means lot more scripts or software to regulate what's being self-enabled)

I don't understand how... one day there were just there...

Originally when I setup the Primary school, you had to select how many accounts you wish to have, at the great price of £0.00. So we went for:

Office 365 A1 for faculty 50

Office 365 A1 for students 15

About a year after that,

Office 365 A1 Plus for faculty turned up with unlimited licenses.

So... and I started switching over the faculty to these licenses.

Office 365 A1 Plus for students appeared with unlimited licenses.

Other than that during this time we also did get an EES-OVS agreement, and activated our Software Assurance, but I don't think that had any bearing... could be wrong though.
