Portable Tech Support Tool

Hi all,

 

For my university dissertation I'm creating a touchscreen, portable tech support tool, that will sit in a classroom to ease the workload of a small IT department.

 

It'd be doing password changes/providing basic support for teachers (e.g. what cable goes where) and similar jobs.

 

I was wondering if this had been done before and if so, could anyone provide links to similar products?

 

That way I can compare and (hopefully) improve upon what already exists.

Sounds like an interesting idea. I'd be keen to see how it all works once in the end.

 

We have biometric terminals for self service password resets, it works fairly well. They log in with their finger, select reset password, and put in a 4 digit number, this is then combined with a 4-5 letter word to make a temporary password (the word but not the number is displayed on the screen for a couple of seconds) and the "user must change password at next login" flag is set.

 

The problem we've seen with other systems is validating the user. We can't use email as our email logins are tied to AD accounts (so if they've forgotten their password they can't get into email, even if they could log into a computer). And anything that doesn't validate the user in some way is too open to abuse.

Sorry to dredge up an old thread, @Rob_D what do (did) you use for the biometric password reset? Sounds like a great implementation.

 

I had a thought of maybe somehow integrating it into our catering system (no idea how I would) as we have pre-order screens which use fingerprints to log in already.

Hey,

 

We use Biostore for biometrics (for canteen, printing, library, etc), and it's their AD/password reset solution. We've got the networked readers for the printers for the printers (pic below) and have them multi-licenced so pupils can choose to either log into the printer or reset their password.
