Why is Azure so much cheaper for backups, what don't you get?

Heres a question, why is Azure so much cheaper than other companies for cloud storage, whats the difference?

 

Have been quoted £360 per annum for Azure Backup, have been quote over £1k for companies to provide storage.

 

What doesnt Azure do that other companies do?

 

My goal is to get a full server backup with incremental backups so in the event of a disaster i can say. As soon as the server arrives give me a few hour and tada, were back.

What are you trying to backup like size wise etc? Azure has always been one of the most expensive when I've looked previously.

 

I mean for 1 server at 100Gb you'll be paying about £120 a year (standard pricing), so sounds like you're only backing up tiny amounts of data in that quote? Also the standard level of Azure doesn't include support etc.

Microsoft traditionally offer large discounts for their products to educational establishments. It could well be just an artifact of that?

Less than 500gb without compression, and i havnt done any picture resizing on this network yet.

Yep, so 1 instance at 500gb with GRS would be about that £360 (or LRS + their mark up? )

 

But remember that includes no support (or next to none):

As long as it is a single server running 500gb shouldn't be that costly with any service tbh. It only gets difficult with large storage or multiple instances

We use it to back up our important drives and originally it wouldn't backup system state but now it says it can. We are small junior and infant schools and pay between £150 a year to £300 a year per site. It's a god send for us as gives us offsite encrypted backups. We have it run three times a day and run our normal backup to tandberg rdx every day. Also as an added benefit when schools ring me and ask me to recover data I don't have to wait while someone finds the correct tape etc and has saved me a number of visits to sites.

Looking at videos about the new Backup Server application it looks like it can do a full system backup now.

For our SIMS server we use dbattach to gain a local backup so a full server would be handy so we would have to worry about installing new Os, installing SIMS etc.

 

Have requested a Azure specialist to get in contact.

To save on space we have excluded media files from the azure backup which shouldn't be there anyway, we have nas boxes for that.
