Outlook - Export PST Silent?

Hi all

 

Is there a way to export a PST from Outlook in the background, I'm trying to move someone over the 365 - Client has an online exchange server but accessing it remotely is like wading through molasses, it is in front of it too to be fair. I can log on to each user remotely or issue a remote command - can I expot a PST from Outloook without having to disrupt the user too much?

There used to be a tool you could run to export PSTs out of Exchange - just had to have Outlook installed (but not opened, think it just hooked into some of the DLLs) and permission to the mailboxes... unfortunately can't remember its name or how long ago (I think I used it when I moved from exchange 2003 to exchange 2007 so it probably doesn't exist any more

Ah right thanks, I wouldn't be able to run it on the exchange server anyway its that slow!!! Be easier and quicker to retype all emails that ever existed in the systems and send them to the users one by one - Yes it is that bad, hence going to 365 lol.

I though you could set up a connector with your current exchange and Office 365 and it will just do it in the background.

Ohhh duh, not sure how I forgot as this is how I moved to 365. If you're using a new enough exchange version (I think 2013+) you can use migration batches on 365. It will need a lot of work to set up (I didn't set ours up as it was a shared trust-wide exchange system, I think he said it needed ADFS) but I did do my own migration into my 365 tenancy, it took ages but basically went smoothly.

The mailbox replication service was available from Exchange 2010, although on boarding is supported back to ex 2003 just have to use a different approache in the older versions.

You can PowerShell mailbox from Exchange 2010 to PST files. Did this when we moved our students to 365. Being a college we gave the students option to keep their old mail or not and kept the pst files for a while, a few did most did not.

There is an export-mailbox on exchange 07 maybe 10. Theres also New-MailboxExportRequest with Exchange 2016. But you cant do this with Office 365. I think under ediscovery you can export a users pst. If you have a hybrid environment you could bring the mailbox back on premises and export it.

I suppose what we are missing here is that you have little or no access to the exchange server..... exporting .pst from workstations and then on boarding seems like a different name for molasses to me!
