CCTV on school network - is this a bad idea?

Hi,

Schools extending our cctv and to get back to the main Dvr it needs to go on the network.

Ive been told this is a bad idea re performance wise, can anyone give advice on this

To be fair we've noticed no impact on our network with our CCTV on it. It's vlanned off but that doesn't affect speed, but gives us the means to throttle traffic if needed. Then again, with standard full HD cameras you'd need a LOT to make a dent in your network before your DVR bottleneck is hit.

HD cams are about 5 mbps each so even on a 100mbps link you would need 20 to be in trouble, so that is about 200 to fully utilise a 1 gbps link.

 

We have over 170 cameras but split across different links and have no problems.

We have ours on the network, 16 cams, HD and it make no noticeable impact on the network.

We put a separate network in for the cameras as the traffic goes through the roof. We have 25 geovision fisheyes and 5 bullet cameras and a dome. We also have coax cameras 2 systems, that we broadcast to screens around the school with all this traffic on the network. we would struggle with all the everyday traffic from the school though out the day.
