I'm currently studying for an MSc at the University of Central Lancashire. As part of the course I've put together some resources that could possibly be used to teach 16-19 yr old further education students about using the Raspberry Pi as an Internet of Things device. The students will already have some basic grounding in Python and building simple circuits on breadboards to respond to push buttons and flash LEDs on and off.

 

The instructions are based on a Instructables.com weather station example using a DHT 11 Temp / Humidity sensor and a Light Dependent Resistor.

 

I have re-developed the original resource so that it could be possibly be used in a lab lesson.

 

A fellow student on the course suggested here may be a good place to ask for some feedback.

 

There are two versions of the instructions, the first one is a step by step guide on how to build the hardware, write the program and get data published to the Internet. The second is takes more of a problem solving approach, where the students have to work out how to wire the sensors up and write the Python code with hints & help along the way.

 

There is also a set of Leaders Notes, which give an outline lesson plan and some extra info. I would expect this to be used in conjunction with the detailed instructions.

 

I'm looking for some feedback to the following questions:

 

1) Are these appropriate for use with a 16-19 Year old further education group?

 

2) Which would you be more likely to use with a class the Detailed Instructions or the Student Worksheet and why?

 

3) Is the level of abstraction appropriate?

 

4) Do you think this would be interesting enough to engage / motivate the students?

 

5) Do the timings in the lesson plan look reasonable / achievable?

 

6) Any other constructive feedback or comments would be welcomed

I don't think a lot of FE teachers lurk on these forums

 

I'd think you might get a better response on twitter with appropriate hashtags
